in the second matrix smith walks up and hands over his ear peice and explains neo set him free. im guess his ear peice was his link to the matrix just as all the other agents all have ear peices.

BUT in the frist matrix when Smith is talking to morpheus he pulls out his ear peice to talk to him one on one?

in fact when the other agents came up stairs to see what smith wanted to do about neo and trinity entering the building he had no idea. the other agents seemed displeased that he had unplugged his ear peice and had no clue what was going on?

the ear peice is wat connects them dirrectly to the machine maiframe, it is wat they use to find out were the people are thats why the always morph into other people or watever right after the push there earpiece to there ear.

i dont know i see it as more than that. i think there is something to that no one has picked up on yet.

if it was merely a connection to the matrix for information why were the other agents so displeased he took it out. and if thats all it was why did he give it to neo to symbolize his freedom?

they werent displeased that the earpeice was removed but that he couldnt recieve there transmissions that the others were comin to save morpheus, and then i think that he gave it to neo as freedom cus he wasnt connected to the mainframe anymore thats y he didnt have the green glow of the coding on him like the other agents did.

He was demonstrating to Neo that he too was Unplugged, apparently, free: and that he was no longer an Agent of the System...

Hugo Weaving played Smith perfectly...Only he could have carried off the role. I think everyone is beginning to understand my love for Smith!

its symbolizes freedom, independence, disobedience. that earpiece makes him do what he is programmed to do. by removing it, it just means he's following his own will, charting his own course.
Obviously in the end of M1, he's supposed to delete himself, but didnt.
