From what i understood from the movie, the war between The Machines and the Humans isn't over, there is simply a seize-fire. People like Commander Locke will never trust the Machines, look at it from the perspective of the Cold War. (The Americanist Humans cannot and will not trust those damn communist Machines).

At the same rate, look at some of the final dialogue of the Trilogy. The Architech himself gives the general feeling of the Machines...The Oracle asks 'what will happen to the rest of the people in the Matrix, will they be freed?' And the Architech answers 'Yes, you know they will.' or something along those lines, and the Oracle asks for his word. He says, you have my word, what am i human? Simply saying that the Machines don't trust humanity because they are liers! There may be a time of peace now, but eventually, the war will begin again, and another One will be born. The process beginning again and the soul of the One being recycled.

So, although this is purely speculation, i would assume the Matrix Online will begin around the time that the war starts over again.

Everything that has a beginning, has an end.

It hasn't been released yet.. they're hoping to have it finished within 2004, but with games, deadlines are never certain.

I'm registered to the mailing list so they said they'd notify me when a beta test is available, but they're still very much in the process of developing all the ideas in conjunction with the Wachowski brothers. If you want to find out more you can go to

Zions fight Merv and Machines in PvP, so yeah, you flag up in PvP, you'll get ganked by Machines or Mervs. =/
