She is refering to the chemical reaction of being in love.

The maximum period of the chemical reactions in our body is about 2 years. After that the passionate fire is gone.

Then you...

a) split up
b) stay together while mostly bored (just like the Mero and Persephone)
c) put alot of effort into the relationship and work hard to maintain the passion.
