Councillor Hamann

I watched Reloaded last night. I had a small revelation about Councillor Hamann. I always understood the significance of the conversation between Neo and the Councillor in the engineering level. It was Neo's first insight into the fact that beating the machines may not be the answer...and that in fact machines and Humans living amongst one another might be the only way to resolve this. But I realized that wasn't the only message Hamann was trying to convey.

Now, this theory is not for the MwM believers....so lets not make this a MwM debate.

We know that although Zion is a real place, it is indeed under complete control by the machines. It was built by the machines to control the expected 1%. The machines know exactly where Zion is and how it operates. They let the population of Zion carry out there lives and let them live their life with the illusion of being free. Yada Yada Yada

Now, how come no one in Zion can put 2+2 together and figure out that they are not the first people there but in fact the sixth generation of people? I mean, if they just looked at the very door to their own room and realized that the steel that their door is made from shows well over 500 years of years of erosion, you'd think they would figure it out that Zion is older than 100 years. Why don't they? It's simple:

"Hope. It is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength and your greatest weakness"

I believe that Councillor Hamann is the only citizen of Zion that actually see's the big picture. It's like a splinter in his mind. He see's that although they are not physically plugged into the Matrix like the rest of the human race, the population of Zion is still in fact under control by the machines.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Councillor Hamann: Almost no one comes down here, unless, of course, there's a problem. That's how it is with people - nobody cares how it works as long as it works (Hope....) I like it down here. I like to be reminded this city survives because of these machines. These machines are keeping us alive, while other machines are coming to kill us. Interesting, isn't it ? Power to give life, and the power to end it.

Neo: We have the same power.

Councillor Hamann: I suppose we do, but down here sometimes I think about all those people still plugged into the Matrix and when I look at these machines, I ... I can't help thinking that in a way, we are plugged into them (this of course is to be taken as a metaphor and not literally.)

Neo: But we control these machines, they don't control us.

Councillor Hamann: Of course not, how could they ? The idea's pure nonsense, but ... it does make one wonder just... WHAT IS CONTROL?

Neo: If we wanted, we could shut these machines down.

Councillor Hamann: Of course ... that's it. You hit it! That's control, isn't it ? If we wanted, we could smash them to bits. Although if we did, we'd have to consider what would happen to our lights, our heat, our air.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may not be a revelation for you guys. You may of always seen this scene this way. I always saw it as the Councillor just saying winning against the machines may not be the way to think. Also, that humans and machines need each other. I never saw it as Hamann saying "this place isn't what it seems to be...we are still controlled by the machines". I don't think Neo did either.

You start some very interesting threads Spinak.

And the "nobody cares how it works as long as it works" line (and the others that you have underlined) prove your point. Good work! Thumbup

I see both of the points you mentioned as being both true and related. This would be a good thing for you (or someone) to bring back up whenever the foretold MEXC comes Wink

A double thumbs up Spinak.. Thumbup Thumbup

truly speaking,I never realised it(I mean Hamann seeing the bigger picture)..

After reading your post I saw all the scenes which have Hamann in them....in the end after the war is over and the kid comes running saying "He ended the war...." Hamann's expresion are quite different from the other "prophecy believers".

His expresions are similar to that of Lock's-"It dosn't make sence!"-How did this happen? It wasn't ment to happen this way.

That's right 14515.

Yesterday I was watching the BurlyMan Chronicles DVD from the boxset and I was able to see a few more seconds of Hamman's reaction.

His face looks happy but he is like.. wtf?
