»Food in Zion?«

In M1, Dozer explains that their food is a synthesized single-celled protein (or something like that). I took that to mean that the "goop" was the only food they had in Zion. Let's face it, there are no animals or crops that we could see in Zion.

However, in M2, when Neo goes for a nighttime stroll, there are all sorts of treats waiting for him... How can they make food when there are no crops or animals left on Earth?

in one of the comics, it tells about a man who risked life and limb to plant wheat, somehwere. SO they have bread and stuff.

What about things like sugar? I thought I saw iced cakes in the movie...

I thought that perhaps they learned how to synthesize really complex molecules...

i think the reason why they eat the goop on the ships is because they are gone for long periods at a time, and maybe the goop doesn't go off. were as real food would.

Basically, any food besides the goop is usually rare and hard to come by deep underground. Neo, however, is the one, and so people want to give him the best that they have, even if that means they'll be eating nothing but goop. They are putting their hopes into him.
