Sunglasses Theories?

I feel like there is some significance to the wearing of sunglasses within the matrix, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Do the characters remove their sunglasses when they are telling the truth? I believe in the first movie agent smith takes off his glasses (and earpiece) when he is telling morpheus of how eager he is to be freed from the matrix. Also, in the revolutions trailers, we see neo with a cloth wrapped around his head covering apparently bleeding eyes. Any theories?

In the first part, sunglasses weren't a major part of the neb crew's wardrobe. Only the agents wore them consistently, except smith who thinks he's hot sh*t. In the second one, they were all wearing sunglasses consistently. Neo, however, would take them off in certain instances. i.e. kissing persephone (when he really means it) , talking to the oracle (put them on when smith shows up hmm), reviving Trinity. I don't know exactly what that means but it is what I have observed....
