I'm sure someone has come up with a pretty good answer to this. I looked all over the web and in the forums, but I didn't find anything. The reason I'm doing this is that we want to watch all the Matrix films in order before the third movie comes out. My question is this:

Assuming that the Animatrix is all part of the same universe/timeline as the movies, what are is the order in which each of them happened?

I have an ordering to get things started off, as well as my arguments as tho why I put what where. I'm also assuming that the movies are in order. I'm certainly willing (and hoping) to hear other opinions.

Matrix/Animatrix Chronology:

1. The Second Renaissance, Part 1

2. The Second Renaissance, Part 2

3. Matriculated: This one is tough. Perhaps this was some early attempt to fight the machines some other way that was given up on. If so, maybe this happened quite a long time ago.

4. World Record: This could be any time in the past where the Matrix is in effect; Perhaps it was early on, when they were having trouble with people breaking free.

5. Beyond: This may also be a result of an older, buggier Matrix. Though this is maybe a less serious bug, so perhaps it is after World Record.

6. Program: This could be any time where we're dealing with the current Zion (since they seem to have the same type of ship, etc.) A good guess, then, is well before the first movie.

7. Detective Story: Here we have Trinity, but she's working alone in the hey day of her hackerness. So probably before she met Neo.

8. The Matrix

9. Kid's Story: Neo is freed, so must be after the first movie.

10. Final Flight of the Osiris: The events here set off the events in the second movie. So it happens right before Reloaded.

11. The Matrix: Reloaded

12. The Matrix: Revolutions

SOK

is beyond the one with the little girl and her cat?
if so, the computer at the end reads something like feburary 2003, which puts it after the matrix, mabey even after reloaded.

That brings up a question that has been nagging at me... what year does the matrix restart at when it "reboots" after the emergence of each integral anomaly? People say it takes 100 years or so for Zion to be repopulated from the 23 chosen and any others who are released from pods along the way. If the One always manifests himself around when the virtual clock hits 1999 and then he returns to the Source a few months later, that tells me the reboot takes the human race back to the beginning of the 20th century.

Then is the One who selects the 23 chosen immediately able to grab a Zion ship that didn't get destroyed (note the Neb was made way more than 100 years before Morpheus became its captain), and start saving people from their pods? That would mean humans from our year 1910 who've never seen an automobile or television getting yanked into the "desert of the real", I would imagine those people would "pop" quicker not believing in the Zion world at all.

Just as further points, note time seems to progress inside the matrix at the same rate as outside, so 100 years in Zion = 100 years sleeping in the matrix. The previous One could have died of old age being 80+ years old after he released Morpheus, that One's life being 20 years of sleeping in a previous matrix and 60 years of rebuilding Zion. Morpheus is old enough to remember being saved by the previous One, and you can suggest that he was young when it happened, since they say it's not safe to free a mind when it's as old as Neo was in M1. Morpheus could have been in Zion for 40+ years before Neo is released, giving us about 100 years of timeline again.

Sorry if I missed a thread about this somewhere, but it seems a relevant question to the issue of what time "Beyond" happened, if the matrix never ages past the virtual year 2000 due to the emergence of the One, then a date in 2003 could just be a slip of the animator, remember these animations were finished in early 2003.

Can't... wait... 65... more... hours! Smile
