I know for a fact that Zion was created by the machines. One of the set designers on the matrix had an interview on whatisthematrix.com and he said himself that the machines created Zion.

dude shut up, I know it was pretty obvious before, but I had seen in a couple of other forums that some people still were wondering who built zion, so I just thought I'd say it for a fact.

Agreed. Dont be mean, Grendy. I agree that the first Zion was made by the machines. However, as a precaution, dont always take to face value what the technical people tell you. I have read stuff that the crew of the Matrix movies said about them and it was completely wrong.

Of course, The Architect may have been referring to the repopulation process but I think he is precise enough in his use of language that he would have said 'repopulate' if that's what he meant.

The word 'rebuild' infers [in my mind at any rate] involvement in the technical side of things [construction].

But of course you cannot build something of that magnitude without the use of machinery, ergo what we have here is both humans and machines rebuilding Zion.

It's there as a 'holding pen' of sorts for those who dont accept the Matrix and their offspring. Its most important role however is the scour and search the Matrix for the One in each cycle of the Matrix.

No doubt the machines need an inside source for detection of the one within Zion. But how would they do this?

You know, the one that God gave them so many years ago, accept the one that already had Mulsims living there.

Nowadays the Zionists, although see Israel as their preferable home, have been trying to establish a Jewish nation, vis a vis, Zion, for the last few hundred years.

Replace Zionists with Zionites, Muslims with machines, and Israel with the city of Zion, well we have a perfect, real-life simulation of the conflicts arising in Zion, except that the Zionites don't know of the threat the machines pose.

From what I've read on the subject, Zionism was begun by a fellow by the name of David Ben Gurion who first drew up plans for the creation of a Jewish State which was always intended to be Palestine, with the creation of a Greater Israel further down the road; although the Zionists and Ben Gurion gave the impression that they were also considering Argentina and Australia.
