[Matrix 1]
Neo (the first time he returned to the Matrix): "I used to eat there. Really good noodles. I have these memories from my life. None of them happened. What does that mean?"
Trinity: "That the Matrix cannot tell you who you are."

Or maybe it was because he thought that he should save nice programs like Rama-Kandra instead of most humans that have a bad sense of humor and attitude (hint, hint!). So maybe he also took his darkser side, Smith, into consideration Smile

That would be some shit. But it seems to me that he's in a real state of confusion when he's in Mobile Ave. Who knows if he's considering a darker, Smith-like side?

I think he is only considering Smith when he fights him.

According to the philosophers on the commentary tracks the Matrix is the world of the mind and what takes place there is the battle of ideas.

Seraph says: "You do not truly know someone untill you fight them"

The Oracle says about Smith: "He is you!"

So at the end of M3, Neo is fighting himself. He is fighting his own destructive and darker side.

Most people are afraid of facing their darkside. They supress it, which is a wrong thing to do. When you supress it, it will still come out in some form.

The key to finding psychological balance is to face your darkside, get to know it and finally embrace it.

Neo does this all:

-He faces his darkside (talk at the park)
-He gets to know it (burly brawl and super burly brawl)
-He embraces it (he let's Smith merge with him)

And what was the result? Indeed, balance for the entire world of the mind: the Matrix.

Neo is the lighter side. He represents the side that keeps hoping for a resolution and the ending of the war.

Smith is the darker side. He represents Freudian destructiveness. He wants to end the facade altogehter, because he doesn't believe in a resolution. He is the part of Neo that rather dies than again becoming a slave for the machines.

If, indeed, his motivation is that conscious or rational...

That's a real good way of looking at it, and it is exactly what he does. And in a sense when he embraces it, he is also rejecting it, because he know's that will be the cause of Smith's own demise.

Well that's another symbolic theme I think...

What they meant to say is that you cannot beat your demons during your life. You have to find a way to live with them, you have to find a compromise.

So in order to let Smith go away, Neo has to go away too. They are ONE, so they both have to die.

Man, those Wachowski's are so brilliant! Smile

Yeah, you're right about this. It makes perfect sense, and people can actually relate to this.

Whatever they were smoking when they wrote the movie must have been something crazy because these movies are deep on so many levels.

Because, y'know, smoking *increases* your intelligence and creativity, not *decreases* it...

Um no. Smoking weed kills brain cells, and doing drugs are more harmful than anything. But some of the most brilliant artists and writers did their thing on the side. And I've seen it (FYI, I don't smoke and I hate the smell) especially in college where I think about 75% of the students smoke weed - they tend to use it as a source of initiating creativity.
