Neo = Jesus Christ, the Savior, obviously

Morpheus = Moses, who freed the Israelites out of Egypt....Morpheus led many Matrix prisoners out of the Matrix

Trinity = A representation of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit....She is arguably the most important person in the trilogy next to Neo, for she represents the reasons why humans 'hope' and 'believe'....She is love, and she gave Neo a reason to take the door on the left.

The Oracle = The Bible. The bible can show you the path, but at the end of the day you have to make up your own damn mind whether you're willing to accept it or reject it. The Bible is the way, the truth, and the light....just like the Oracle.

Merovingian = The Devil. He resounds in Club Hel (a representation of Hell).

Seraph = A guardian angel

This is all I can think of for now. Maybe something like this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it if it has. Let's build up this list!

Some people say that Neo is also a Old-testament figure like Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt, but that's for you to decide.

And are we talking about just characters or are we also refering certain things that happen in the movie? (Because there's many of those, one including Neo dying and coming back to life, (which happened with Jesus on the cross and subsequent resurrection).

The Crew (M1) as the disciples- true, there weren't 12 of them, but he's brought to a group of people who believe he is The One (ie- Tank)

Cypher, who is the 'Judas' (betrayer) of the movie (M1)

Smith = the AntiChrist

The Architect = God

Bane = mankind's suseptiblity to corruption

The Trainman = the ferryman on the river Styx (not sure if that's biblical)

The matrix has you...

Smith is not the antichrist... The antichrist doesn't fight against the system... I am not sure who does...

Neo could be the antichrist... Since he ends up supporting the system instead of destroying it...

Would it make sense to suggest that Merv is the antichrist. In M2 he is shown in a set-up that looks very much like the image of the last supper. There he looks very much like a Christ figure. Later on though he is shown in hell.

Smith, for me, represents human sin and despair.

Merv is the devil. Smith is neo's opposite. If Neo is destined to save mankind then Smith is destined to destroy it.

Neo wants to save the system for the good of everybody. Smith wants to destroy it. How much more antichrist can you get. Neo wants good, he wants evil. Neo wants life, he wants death. Neo wants salvation, Smith wants destruction.

Neo serves only the best intention, which means the salvation of machine world(the system) when it serves his purpose. Smith stands for the destruction of inevitably everything. He represents mankind's nature to inevitably destroy everything that has been bestowed upon him. The anomaly represents both beginning and end in the matrix. If Smith and Neo are one, then Neo is creation and Smith is destruction.

Not everything is black and white..
Neo is not just good - and Smith is not just evil...
It never is that way...

Why is Mirovingian the Devil? Just because of his club? Please...
Neo is the one who bugs him, not the other way around. Is he responsible for all the suffering the humanity has, like the Bible says he is?
Listen to yourself, if he is the devil that means the devil holds the key to the source...

But let me ask you first, who is the antichrist? According to the bible it is anyone who doesn't accept jesus as their saviour... Who is it? Marilyn Manson?
By the way, you can talk all you want about the bible and the matrix, but Marilyn Manson has made two songs for their soundtrack...
I got nothing against Manson - he is an entertainer, but he is a self proclaimed Antichrist Superstar...

I wonder if Antichrist really wants death, destruction and all those things you write about? How would anyone know?

Neo is not 100% good and let me explain why:

a) People remain enslaved by the matrix in the end
b) he kills hundreds/thousands of people while fighting in the matrix

Actually the true defination of Anti-Christ is just that, one who doesn't accept the teaches of Jesus.

Somehow Christians have turned the idea of an Anti-Christ and personified it into one man who has become some sort of religious "Supervillain". This is just a misinterpretation(sp?), that is the idea of the "anti-christ superstar".

We were just discussing characters in the movie and their parallels to biblical characters. It's not like Smith is actually The Antichrist. He's not coming to get you or anything. Whitelaugh The Merovingian represents a powerful evil melevolence that is found within the matrix just as the Architect represents creation. I believe everybody in here can agree that Neo represented the hero in the movie and Smith was his nemesis. At least I hope that was obvious to everybody.

If you want to get all phlisophical, well that's another discussion entirely.

Smith quotes from the bible -

"I am the Alpha of your Omega. I am the beginning of your end."

Problem is, I can't remember who says this. Can anyone else?

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star. Like tears from a star
On and on the rain will see
How fragile we are. How fragile we are.

It is from the book of revelation.
Although it is not I am the alpha of your Omega, but simply I am alpha and Omega...

Smith's liscense plate in Reloaded: IS5416

Isaiah 54:16 (NIV) --
"See, it is I who created the blacksmith
who fans the coals into flame
and forges a weapon fit for its work
And it is I who have created the destroyer to work havoc;"

The plate on Trin and Morpheus' car during the freeway chase: DA203

Daniel 2:3 (NIV) --
"He said to them, "I have a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means."" That 'he'? Nebuchudnezzar.

I wouldn't say that the Merovingian is Satan as much as he is Hades. But that's Greek/Roman mythos, not Biblical. As for the Architect, yes, he styles himself as God, but I'd say he'd be closer to Metatron.

Neo, I think, is the serpent, not the antichrist. He's offering truth, the forbidden fruit. Smith represents many things, fanaticism among them.

Kids! Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not attempt it in your home.

I think Morpheus is the serpent - since he is the one offering the fruit of knowledge, but I guess Neo does some of that too.

Smith is humanity's unconsciousness. Its dark side, its desire to end ourselves and our world right here, right now... But he is human... He has humor (the only one in the movie). And he has a very perceptive mind...

He doesn't want to settle...

Thinking of what you said about Mirovingian and Hades, something does come to mind. There is a legend about Orpheus going into Hades's kingdom to get his girl back... Well he gets his wish, but he loses her anyway... It is irrelevant... Except when you think that maybe Keymaker was dead in the matrix and that's why Mirovingian had him... Same logic can be applied to Neo and the trainstation... He died... When he died, he got into Mirovingian's kingdom... The trainman was there to take him across the river... But his buddies got him back...

That's uh, not exactly biblical, and since the ending of the story has been changed for the purposes of the analogy, not exactly correct, either.

Plenty of stories involve a journey to the other side to rescue someone, not just one Greek myth.

*Merovingian. Show a little respect for the script, huh?

More Seraph-ness:

Isaiah 6:2 KJV - wrote:

Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

('twain' meaning 'two' or 'a pair', for those not familiar with antiquated language.)
Again, interesting thoughts appear about the 'Wingless' nickname... why wasn't he called 'Nephil' (apart from the fact that that sounds like an elephant...)

Matthew 27:3 KJV - wrote:

Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders

The room where Neo is killed in M1? Number 303

Notice also that Cypher has a red jumper during the betrayal scene. I can't find the exact referance, but I swear there's something about Judas giving Jesus a red robe, or something similar... -.-;

Very well then, is there a biblical story about someone who goes into hell to get his friend or girlfriend back?

Nope.

Not that i'm aware of. I should point out that I am not Christian, and so do not know the Bible well.

No, there is not. The only known resurrection other than Jesus' is that of Lazarus.

Well, there is a story about Faust... (not exactly from the Bible, but same basis).
He did check out hell - didn't he?

By the way, I just had to post this picture that I have just found:
