Why so much talk about him?
Why do people concentrate that much attention on him?
In my opinion, he is very much irrelevant to the plot...

For starters, and at least in my case, he's hot. Whooo, baby, is he hot!

For another, he's very enigmatic, and what little we do know of him only serves to heighten the mystery around him. We know he's an excellent fighter, having defeated Smith before and being equal to Neo. We know he once worked for the Merovingian and left under bad circumstances; what the circumstances are, we don't know. We know he is an Exile; why else would Smith chase him? We know his self-given purpose is to protect "that which matters most"... but what is it that he believes matters most?

We assume he is an angel, given his name and the nicknames provided in Revs ('Wingless', 'l'Ange sans aiels'), but there is so much we do NOT know. That is why we talk about him, omega -- because he is a mystery we want to unravel. A character need not be relevant to the plot to be interesting.

Kids! Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not attempt it in your home.

Well, it kinda explains all the hype around him, and it also explains why I really don't give a damn about him:

Hot or not - NOT...

Excellent fighter - don't really care about all the fighting scenes...

We don't know if he really worked for Mirovingian (it is not in the movie). We can assume that he did... Maybe you guys saw the cartoons or something...

I am not sure if Smith was chasing him or was he chasing the little girl... It is quite irrelevant, because he gets them both...

So, in the end, he fails to protect the Oracle or the little girl... So much for the protection of "what matters most"...

It isn't in the Animatrix, no, but it HAS been officially confirmed. Take a look at the Official Seraph Information thread.

The incident I refer to happened prior to the movies. Smith commented that he remembers chasing Seraph was like chasing a ghost, to which Seraph answered, "I have beaten you before!" Smith confirmed this.

I said that was his self-given purpose. Several people translate 'what matters most' into either 'hope' or 'the future'. I am among them. And I never said he succeeded in that purpose.

Seraph has some kind of connection to the Merovingian and his crew...
This is obvious in the scene, where Trinity, Morpheus and Seraph fight the bouncers at Club Hel, where the bouncers immidiately recognizes him...

"Holy shit, it has no wings..."

Furthermore the Merovingian himself calls Seraph "my little Judas" or something like that, and as they enter the Club Hel, he says something in french meaning something like Wingless Angel or Dark Angel or something like that...

And the word "Judas" clearly states, that Seraph was once on the Merovingians side and later betrayed him...(and sided with the Oracle ?)

Seraph is a very important character, as he represents the "other" side of programs, developing (and feeling?)...he also turns the interpretation of the movies in a more buddhistic direction as he meditates, drinks tea and so on...

I have one issue considering Serapd though:
Is he an exile ?
I am well aware of the information given in MxO regarding him, but still...when Neo ask him (in Reloaded) what his purpose is, he is capable of giving a reasonable answer:
"I protect that, which matters most..."
So he has a purpose ?...comments anyone ?

Omega, that was the entire point. Smith got to EVERYONE in the end, which is why he was ultimately defeated. Drop it.

EqUiLiBrIuM: Seraph is an Exile, which is why he and Smith have that cryptic conversation in Revolutions about an earlier battle between them. It can safely be assumed that Smith was still an Agent when they fought, which would mean Seraph was an Exile.

Seraph is an Exile, but he has a purpose. The Keymaker was an Exile, and he had a purpose, did he not? The difference is that these purposes are ones they (or others) created, not System-sanctioned purposes.

I think that key maker was a system-generated program
It was architect's plan all along, wasn't it...
I think the confusion in the movie is purposeful...

Book of Isaiah
6:1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
6:2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, [is] the LORD of hosts: the whole earth [is] full of his glory.

Don't look at me, I don't get it either. I'd always considered Seraph a fallen angel, possibly even involved in freeing the first humans from the Matrix - possibly the Paradise, possibly not. It's a killer fanfic idea, though. *grin*
