Why the Oracle can see the future

The oracle doesn't predicts anything, it just sees what has already happened. You can think of this as "buffering", humans do actions, actions affect the matrix, the matrix is then rendered and inserted in their brains. As the oracle's a program, it sees it before rendering, so can predict it.
Neo's also part program (The One is a program, and was inserted into Neo just like Smith could control Bane)...
The One's mechanism of control, probably based on the agent's source code (that's why smith says about their "connection"). The Matrix probably chooses a random body and uploads the code... Like the ending of revolutions "will neo come back ?"... of course Smile

How the oracle can see into the future is an interesting question. I agree, she is not predicting, she is simply reading the program and know what the outcome will be before it is rendered. Before the third movie, this answer could have been debated because all she predicts is that Morpheus would find the one, Trinity would love the one, and that Neo was not the one yet. She doesn't show any concrete abilty to see actual events in the future, she is simply "a guide" as Morpheus put it. But in the third movie, Smith, using the Oracle's eyes, actually sees an event happening, i.e. his victory of Neo. He sees the actual scene unfold. This presents a VERY big implication to the movie and its meanings and everything. If future events are known, than the outcome is inevitable and choices are irrelevant. The Oracle actually supports this statement in Reloaded by saying "you've already made you choice, now you have to understand why you're making it" (not the actual quote, but close I think). She's saying that all our choices come from the sum of all our experiences, thoughts, and feelings. With everything coming together at that moment, there is only one choice that can be made. This is very typical of a "predestination" philosphy, that the sum all prior effects causes the next inevitable effect, that all things have already happened and that we are just along for the ride in order to enjoy/experience/understand/learn/etc. . .I think this goes against all the other themes about free will in the movies, but dammit they wrote it into the script, so it was either a philosophical oversight on the W. Brothers' part, or else it was just meant to be an idea thrown out there with the rest of their ideas.

The more I see Revolutions the more I believe that The Oracle is really the "hero" of the story.

Here is my little theory.

Is it possible that the Oracle cannot actually see the future, but rather is just manipulating the characters to ultimatly accomplish her goals? It seems that her purpose is to free the programs that have no purpose, she can then educate and guide them and build a better matrix with the goal of perhaps influencing the machines from inside the sphere of the matrix.

She can only do so much, but with the help of Neo and alike she can set her plans in order and try to bring all the characters together to get to her ultimate aim. Perhaps these programs will grow to be very powerfull and eventually work back up to the Source changing the machines from people haters to one of tolerance and compassion.

Just thinking outloud.

Here, in our world, criminal profilers are trained for years in the art of reading people's minds, and personalities, as well as predicting their future actions. To defend their hypotheses, they rely on the precedents of thousands of prior, similar cases. This extends as well to writers, actors, and even mildly competent salepeople. I believe that the same idea can be extended to the Oracle as well.

Consider what the Architect said to Neo in Reloaded: that she was an "intiuitive program, initially created to investigate certain aspects of the human psyche." Basically, the Architect is describing the Oracle as a mixture of profiler, anthropologist, psychologist, and sociologist. You will notice that the Oracle is unable to predict non-human events within the Matrix (at least, not to the same degree), but rather is limited to evaluating the personalities, body language, and nuances of mannerism unique to human beings within the Matrix. I believe that the Oracle's gift owes itself not to supernatural endowments, but rather to a Machine-like understanding of human behavior and psychology, as well as an exquisite understanding of mathematical probabilities.

Simply put, the Oracle is not a psychic, nor is she God. She's just doing what she was meant to do. That is, reading people.

What does it mean to say the Oracle can see the future?

From what I can understand, there are 3 possibilities of how the Oracle can "see" the future:
- she is a profiler that studies the behavior of people, so she is a mix of psychologist, socialist, and criminal profiler. She is the "intuitive" program. So she does not actually predict human behavior, but by extrapoloting from many examples and profiles in the past, she finds the most likely behavior of a person.
- Or, she actually does predict the future by reading ahead of the programs, if we assume that all human behavior and all events are the sum of the solutions of equations, then solving one variable at a time, one equation will lead to the next and eventually lead to the future.
- Or, the Oracle is merely a "guide".

Now, it is entirely possible that the Oracle in fact has no special power to predict the future of any non-human events, only in "guessing" the most likely behavior of human beings.

What I am fascinated and at the same time, troubled, is when I contemplate how ANY being can "predict" the future. Do we have the free will to CHOOSE? I mean, if in OUR real world, there is a being who can predict how much money will each of us have in our bank accounts when we die. Now, this is a PRECISE prediction, it is a number, how much money will you have in your bank account when you die. There is no mumbo-jumbo, no ambiguity, the kind of psychic talk we get from the oracle. It is an actual prediction and it will either be correct or incorrect.

But the troubling thing is that if such a being could make that prediction, then is the future already decided? We could say such a being merely predicts the choices of each person, and those choices lead to the consequence, the amount of money in the bank account at death.

Of course, I am merely using the amount of money in bank account as a measurement. It would be far more meaningful to predict will the person be happy.

I am still disturbed by the idea that the future has been "decided" if in fact it were possible to predict the future.

The Oracle and Determinism

It is to my belief that determinism plays a very large part in the matrix. The architect writes his code based on this.

The ability that the Oracle and the everyone with the ability to predict the future (i.e. Neo, Architect, etc.) can look at all the factors and choices that have been made and thus predict or have an idea about what needs to be done and what will happen.

However, choice plays an important role. Since determinism, the fact that everything that happens will happen because of cause and effect relationships set in play since the beginning of time, isn't completely true in this world because of the uncertainty principle, we can not have a 100% clear view of the future.

Chaos and uncertainty are two factors that cloud the future. The oracle sees this in the fact that she can not read what choices someone will make, especially if they are unsure. They can only read clear cut choices.
So, while they can read cause and effect factors and process them, since they are computers, afterall, and they are more than just supercomputers, the machines have AI, so they must be able to compute to some extent what the future will be like.

Others are doubtful, like the Merovingian, but it is my belief that he was once human, a former one. He does not believe in choice. But if he was a former one, he suffered the fate of having to reinsert himself into the source/prime program. He must still be bitter. he he.

You have to see the prediction of the future as a computational funtion. It is my belief that neo has a dual nature, as it is stated, his power goes back to the source. So, he can harness the machine's power of computation and thus predict the future. However, like I said, the far future is clouded with uncertainties, especially when it comes to human decisions.

You hit it right on the nose, tri-geek. If anyone were ever able to actually predict the future, that would mean that no matter what we think or choose, we can't affect our outcome one bit. Life has already been lived, we are only here for the ride. However, I believe nostradamus and all those soothsayers to be hogwash. Until someone actually predicts the future, I'll go with free will. It doesn't really matter of course, because if the future is prewritten, then there's nothing I can do about it and it doesn't matter what I believe. However, in terms of the movie, it lets us know that the Wachowski Brothers believe in predestination, at least within the Matrix. But how do the programs account for human choice?

By the way, did you notice that as the movies go on, the Oracle is less able to predict what Neo is going to do? In the beginning, she has him pegged down to knowing whether he's going to eat the cookie or knock down the vase. In Reloaded, she says that he's surprising her and I think there was a reference about not knowing if he was going to show. And then in Revolutions, she's absolutely surprised that he returned to the kitchen like she had no idea it was coming. I wonder if that has somthing to do with the program breaking down due to the anomaly (anomalies). Of course she still knows what's going to happen at the end.

The Oracle is a simply a guide, that is there to help Neo in his path. The intuitive program, the psychologist and the anthropologist theories are not far from the truth. It is this "skills" or "knowledge" or whatever you want to call it, that allow her to tell people exactly "what they needed to hear".

I believe this became her purpose after she fufilled the

As to why she decides to help Neo, and in a way "betray" her own kind, is still uncertain. My explanation is that in all her exploration of the human civilization, she became attached to our kind, thus, she wanted the war to be over.

Unfortunately no one can be told what The Matrix is...You have to see it for yourself.

My question is does the Oracle know her own purpose. If the One is just another form of control, then the Oracle is also. Which is why she is programmed to help the One reach the Source. So is she really betraying her own kind? Or is she just helping the machines destroy Zion?

Oracle On Humans Side

While I think the Oracle has worked with the Machines to direct the One on the right path. I think she is a free thinking being. Here's why:

While she works for the machines, she does was peace and freedom for humans. We see this at the end of Revolutions when she makes the architect promise to free those who want to be (just like before) and she asks how long the peace will last. She is concerned for the humans.

The Oracle is a free thinking program because she doesn't always do what is best for the machines. She does work with the humans, which is her purpose, but if she really was sure about what she is doing, she wouldn't need a protector: Seraph.

Notice that she didn't have Seraph in the first movie, when she was doing the machine's work, but when she started siding with and helping Neo, she needs Seraph.

But it could be argued that she needs protection from Smith and the Merovingian as well... OK, I can buy that. But something tells me that she does side with the humans more than the machines.

As for how she gets her power, I've explained it in other threads, and it has to do with predicting and computing cause and effect relationships and the idea of determinism. She does have limited prediction in some cases... as seen in the movies.

Just wanted to make sure that I got the point across that she works for the machines but sometimes does help the humans. She is a peaceful program, she doesn't like war. The End.

the oracle was created to understand the human mind, why it chooses, why it loves, why it feels, etc. that is how she determinded that the system could only work with choice, and i feel the only way she felt she could get the machines and humans to understand one another was to get them to work together, which ended up resulting in peace. think of what a big deal it was to have seraph, morpheus and trinity working together for a common goal....i also feel that neo would not have broken the vase, if she had not have said anything, in my mind, she knew how the human mind works, and that "the mind makes it real" which is why she prophecized....this whole trilogy is the oracle finding a solution to the error, she is the one in control, because she is the only one who understands both worlds and minds.

The Oracle can only see the past

I think that we should remember that there have been at least five previous matri.

We know that in each new matrix an anomoly will appear, following which the Matrix will inevitably crash. Every begining has an end.

The Architect expects this apperance and builds new assumptions, systems of control, based on previous chaos caused by the one. He knows something new will happen in each matrix, but despite his best endeavours he can not and never will be able to cover all eventualities. The problem is that whatever scenerio he constructs to constrain the one, he can not force the one to stick to his rules.

That is because Neo makes choices that go beyond mathematical logic, based on factors machines can not comprehend - faith, belief, emotion. In each Matrix the Architect learns a little more - he won't make the same mistakes again!

Back to the Oracle: How does the Oracle see into the future? She dosen't - she sees into the past, she knows what has gone before. Why does Neo start to supprise her? Because he has made a new choice, one that could not be predicted from previous Matri and one she has not seen before. New choices are the choices she can not understand. Next time she will know better.

From that point on she 'flying blind', relying on her own intuition to bring about her desired outcome. As the Architect says, a dangerous game indeed.

Actually, there is a scientific way that, besides the repeating sequence of 5 earlier reloads, would allow the Oracle to strategize the best possible solution. It’s called recursive procedure. Let me quote Ray Kurzweil from his book The Age of Spiritual Machines, page 74.

“Recursion is a useful approach to generating all of the possible solutions to a problem, or, in the context of a game such as chess, all of the possible move-countermove sequences…”

He continues:

“For each move, the program constructs a hypothetical board that reflects what would happen if we made this move. For each such hypothetical board, we now need to consider what our opponent would do if he made this move. Now recursion comes in, because Pick Best Move simply calls Pick Best Move (that is, itself) to pick the best move for our opponent. In calling itself, Pick Best Move then lists all of the legal moves for our opponent.”

Armed, with programming that enables the Oracle to assess what would happen if the opponent (humans & Neo) made such and such kind of moves far out into the future, as well as being privy to the information she garnered from the previous 5 reloads, the probability of being “checked” by her opponent would, while infinitesimal, still exist.

The Architect says the following to Neo:

“While it remains a burden assiduously avoided, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control. “

From what we hear the Architect tell the Oracle about her “dangerous game” in M3 and what Kurzweil tells us programming can do today, it is very possible that the Architect’s words to Neo about offering some measure of control are referring specifically to this recursive kind of knowledge. This also supports the relationship between the Oracle and the Architect as working together.

i think it is a combination of a few different factors

firstly i think that she may "hack" or use some of the architects many calculations and predictions for outcomes....combined with her own human intuition programming and some of the merovingians cause and effect theory in the way she influences and instigates the behaviour of the humans

all this in total will be quite a powerful force on the humans behaviour

for example...she told trinity that she would fall in love with "the one" and because trinity totally trusts the oracle...she did...even though previously trinity hinted that she was not in love with neo in m1...she said "everything the oracle has told me has come true...everything but this...and im afraid of what it might mean"

this essentially hints that trinity forced herself to fall in love with neo in order to maintain the false prophecy

I too, was curious about those words Trinity said. I decided that a part of what she said acts as an example that supports the Oracle's statement that no one can see past the choices they don't understand. Trinity's choice to love the One, could only take her so far. After that, it was a free fall. She had to continue to pursue her choice and figure it out as events unfolded.

There seemse to be more information in her words, but I haven't come across anything yet that I can tie into it.

I think the Oracle only predicts the future and doesn't know or read it. Also she can only predicted the human events and not any non human events. This is because she is "an intuitive prgram". She is a program designed to read human psychology. After knowing the psyche of a person, it is not difficult to predict their movements.

This also explains how she can predict the future even when there is free-will and choice. Knowing the psyche of a person also allows you to predict the choices they are likely to make. She takes all this into consideration and 'predicts' what humans are going to do.

Just another quick thought. She often says that we can only see as far as the choices we understand. She may have come up with this theory based on her observations of people. She can only predict as far as her subjects understand their choices. If I myself don't understand the choice I am going to make than how can she "read" me and predict the choice I am to make.

In short, she has not special supernatural powers but uses psychology, sociology and stuff like that to predict human behaiviour and movement.

The Oracle actually predicts the Future

There are very interesting theories in this thread, especially that last one (I really like that explanation) but there is an issue that is being missed. The Oracle knows actual events that are going to happen i.e. Smith defeating Neo in the final fight and Trinity falling out the window in Reloaded. Although she never actually says that she's seen these events, it can be deduced. Smith is able to see his victory over Neo once he absorbs the Oracle and, presumably, gets the Oracle's eyes. The Oracle probably already saw the vision herself which is why she allowed herself to be absorbed. I say she allowed herself to be absorbed because "the Oracle's eyes must be given, not taken."
I say that she saw Trinity fall out the window because when Neo asks her about it she knows what he's talking about without him having to explain. In fact, I have to wonder if she actually gave Neo the vision, because Neo, otherwise, does not have any ability to see the future. Anyway, both these visions lead to some problems with the theories on this thread because they involve outcomes that occur in the real world. For instance, Trinity is forced to enter the Matrix because the ship that was on that mission (I can't remember the name) was destroyed and the crew disabled. How did the Oracle know that the ship would be destroyed? Smith fights Neo after Neo makes the conscious decision to go to 01 and avoids potentially disastrous hazards along the way. How does the Oracle know that he can navigate these hazards or that he will decide to go for that matter? If her intuition comes from programming, how does she predict the future in the real world?

The Oracle, Predictions, Human Nature, and "The Equatio

Hey, my first post!
View user's profile

I believe that "The Equation" that The Architect refers to needs some explaining before talking abou the Oracle's ability to predict the future. The Equation is really about how people live and the choices they make. The Equation is an extremely complex formula that allows The Oracle, as well as The Architect to predict the future, based on patterns of human behavior. This equation, coupled with hundreds and thousands of years of data gathered by the machines regarding human behavior, provides these special programs with the ability to predict how a given human will respond in a specific situation. Additional information used in The Equation for predicting future events are all the sensory input, past experiences (memory), and "personality" each individual has.

The Equation was originally purely quantitative in nature, and could not factor in how emotion will influence one's behavior and choices. With The Oracle's help, her understanding of emotion helped refine The Equation so that it could more accurately predict human behavior. The machines do not fully comprehend emotion, and it causes The Equation to be imperfect -- causing an "imbalance" to The Equation, if you will. In The Architect's speech to Neo, he states, "Already, I can see the chain reaction - the chemical precursors that signal the onset of an emotion, designed specifically to overwhelm logic and reason." It is clear that The Architect considers emotion to be an unpredictable variable that does not follow "logic and reason", which limits his ability to know what Neo will do. It is Neo's emotions (specifically, his love for Trinity), that cloud the ability of The Architect to predict Neo's future.

In fact, when Neo is about to react to something The Architect says, the monitors behind The Architect show all of the reactions that The Equation predicts Neo can possibly have. When Neo makes a choice as to how he will react/respond, we zoom in through that monitor, discarding all other possible reactions. Each possible reaction has a different possibility of occurring. The Equation decides that the reaction with the highest likelihood of occurring is selected -- this is the monitor that we zoom into.

The Oracle, on the other hand, has some "intutive" abilities that The Architect lacks. She does understand emotion, and armored with this ability, is much more capable of predicting human behavior and choices than The Architect can. Though she does understand emotions, they are still an inexact science, so she cannot always be 100% accurate.

With each new version of The Matrix, The Equation becomes more and more precise. It was The Oracle's ability to understand emotion that improved upon The Equation after the failure of the first two matrixes. However, the Oracle eventually chose not to help the machines to improve The Equation anymore, becoming an exile, in an effort to bring an end to the war. In order to bring an end to the war, she needed to guide Neo and his companions in order to cause them to make certain decisions. Since she can predict what choices they will make, she can feed them just enough information to influence their future choices until she "sees" that future choice actually occurring.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this theory...

Rherstein,

I believe you hit it right on the nose. Excellent explanations for both the Architect and Oracle. Thumbup

This "Hegel-esque" type of determinism is one of the themes in the Matrix series for sure. Hegel believed that the future of humanity could be predicted by our history and so forth, but only in generalities, not specifics. There is a concept called the "Turing Machine" that is a computer capable of making the near infinite calculations of probablities and causes and effects to predict the specific future of the whole universe. The Architect/Oracle equations are closer to this concept.

I understand the concepts, but I have a problem with how the Oracle or Architect can predict a bolt breaking (thus causing the bridge to collapse, ship to explode, crew members to die, mission to fail, Trinity to enter the Matrix). If this is predictable, then it's kind of a stretch to say that human emotions are unpredictable. I mean, there was human emotion involved in that bolt breaking, could the Oracle tell if the person who torqued that bolt was angry or lazy the day that he/she torqued it? It would certainly play a role in the exact moment that the bolt busted.

I know I'm picking at details, but I intuitively thought that the whole "human emotions are unpredictable" idea was pretty flawed and I'm trying to point out reasons. I don't think the Wachowskis thought it out very well. If they have such exact equations, human choice shouldn't have been that hard to predict and, in fact, human choice can not be extricated from almost any of their predictions. A better study of this determinism concept is Asimov's Foundation series.

I had ( have ) a problem understanding the chance event of a bolt snapping as well. The closest I can get to it is with the maxim "Luck favours the prepared mind"

I found this little paradox while pondering the above question.

The Architect and the Oracle are both mirrored images of eachother. Just think about it.

The Architect is mathematical, "inhuman" (as inhuman as a program may be Razz ), cold, calculistic. Just think of their RSI's! White male vs Black Female Razz

The Orcale, on the other hand, is far more human(e?) and kind.

Remember the room where the architect has all those tv sets?

My theorie spawns from there. Whereas the Architect, as a purely mathematical being does not analyze, seek or question one's choices, merely exposing ALL the possible reactions, independently of the subject's personality; the Oracle has some "gut" instinct that tells her how everyone in her presence and even outside, will react. If you remember well, the Matrix has, per forma, Cause and Consequence.

In My Opinion, the Oracle is omniscent of all choices made in the matrix at all times, thus granting her all the information to predict the outcome.

She says many times "I cannot see past the choices" which means she can't see the future. It also means that she doesn't have all the required data. From the choices come actions that will result in consequences. When she says that she "can't see past the choices", it means she can't predict the consequence of an action that hasn't yet come to be made.

That's just my theory ^^

What bothers me about the bolt is that it has nothing to do with the choices these people are currently making.

This choice of ignoring safety and ignoring maintenance from some unknown irresponsible person in the past, directly works ( or hinders- depending on what side you're on) in someone else's favour.

It's a leap for me that I can't make. It's too arbitrary an incident - too far away from the ongoing action path that we've been led down.
