In Reloaded, Smith tells Neo that without purpose we would not exist. But in Revolutions during their fight scene he says that Neo's existance is without purpose. So is this just a blunder on the part of the Wachowskis or am I missing something here?

The purpose of life is to end.

Therefore all life must have purpose or else it is not life.

Ok. Smith says in Revolutions that the purpose of life is to end. Well, if this is true then why would he say in Reloaded that he was attempting to take Neo's purpose away? That would mean he was trying to take away Neo's very mortality. Smith says, and I quote, "We're here because of you, Mr. Anderson. We're here to take from you what you tried to take from us, purpose."

If Neo's purpose was to end then him becoming assimilated by Smith would have been a fulfillment of that purpose and not Smith taking away his purpose. This is, as far as I know, a blunder on the part of the Wachowskis. That is, of course, unless someone can come up with some kind of plausible explanation.

The ultimate purpose of life is to end. However, there are some secondary purposes as well.

When /Smith tried to assimilate Neo in M2, he was referring to the purpose he had in the good old days when he was an agent of the system. He wouldn't get that purpose back by copying himself into Neo, but--whether or not /Smith knew it--it was a new purpose he was trying to attain by copying himself into Neo: conquest of the Matrix. MORE It's drive-reduction. For example, the purpose of the hunger drive is to end; it ends by us eating, and the grand picture is satisfied. Make sense?

Review
(Paraphrased) AGENT SMITH (to Morpheus): "I need the access codes to the Zion Mainframe. If I get them, then there's no reason for me to be here [because I hate this place]."

This is the essence of what Oracle-Smith said: All life has some purpose or other, but eventually that purpose will either be fulfilled or failed and, ultimately, the end result and big picture is that the purpose of life is to terminate.

As for Neo's purpose, look no further than the meeting with the architect: "The fucntion of the One is now to return to the source to allow a temporary dissemination of the code you carry."

Ah, but Neo chose the wrong door. However, when /Smith assimilated him, Neo--being connected to the source by virtue of being the One--accomplished his purpose and thus ended. /Smith accomplished his purpose by conquering the Matrix. And to top it off, Deus Ex Machina the machine god sent a plethora of voltage through Neo's physical body so as to help the deletion process.

There's one more thing I should tell you, but if I do then I'll die. 3Tooth
