Did the rise of the machines really happen?

Agent Smith: "The perfect world would dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from. Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this, the peak of your civilization."

Now why does Smith say that? Isn't the peak of the human civilization later? When the first robots/machines were invented? Thus maybe the rise of the Artificial Intelligence was a lie.

Need input on this!

if you think of it this way...
would you want humans inside the matrix to create AI or robots that could start another war between humans and machine inside the matrix, thus creating a matrix inside the matrix, and a matrix inside that matrix and yet another matrix inside that one?


it would be an endless cycle of MwM which we do not want. if this were the case, which, dammit is now making me think of Simulacra and Simulation in which everything is a copy and nothing is original, if this is the case then there is no 'waking up' at all, you are stuck in an endless spiral and ugh argh, the horror, those brothers are damn crafty if it were to happen that this is the case

The peak of our civilization is 1999 or as it appears in The Matrix.

Smith also said later in that scene, "I say your civilization because as soon as we started thinking for you it became our civilization."

Thus as the first machines started thinking and using their thoughts for our civilzation it became their civilzation.

You'd be better using a term like "around the turn of the century"

And of course, from a machine point of view it would be our peak, we were laying the foundations for creating them.
