Okay, this was thought up late one night and expanded upon the following day. I'm proud 'cos it explains Wingless rather neatly.

The actual piece goes on for a page, but here's a brief version.

"In the first Matrix, the constellations in the night sky were seperate programs. However, they soon began to argue and bicker, disrupting the order of the heavens.

"One constellation named Phoenix took it upon himself to settle the debates. He was successful in that he cowed the others into submission by improving himself drastically, forming the perfect shape of a phoenix, the bird of fire, in flaming red stars.

"This worked for a time, then a group of constellations, led by the Archer and the Scorpion, banded together against the Phoenix. Together they were able to rip him from the sky.

"The program's shell was corrputed as he fell, and his once proud flame-wings were ripped from his back, remaining in the sky as a much more subdued group of stars. The Phoenix fell, never to fly again. The constellations watched and henceforth refered to him as 'Wingless'. "

It goes on to say how with the Second Matrix, the seperate constellations were slated for deletion, but escaped into Exile and were found by our friend the Merovingian. Consequently, a lot of them began working for him, namely Virgo, the Maiden, taking the new name of, guess who, Persephone. Also Gemini (the Twins); Leo ("Tiger"); Orion (Vlad); Canis Major and Minor (Cain and Abel).

Seraphim = fiery winged one...

Any further ideas?

I think it's an insightful connection to constellations and it WOULD comply with Seraph's name's terminology.

I think different though.

I start with the fact that he's a program and all programs were made by the system. (This would be a bad time for you people to start your Neo-is-a-program whining.) The merovingian or one of his stooges called him Wingless Angel, like he had his wing's clipped. Probably from helping the oracle. This is why he and the merovingian hate each other so much.

Aha...

But, the Merovingian also called Seraph "my little Judas," indicating that Seraph had once worked for the Frenchman and either betrayed him or sold him out.

And one of the Q-Ball gang called him 'Wingless', while Merv himself called our boy l'ange sans ailes - the angel without wings.

Kids! Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not attempt it in your home.

Look closely - I didn't say he wasn't made by the System.

But he is a wingless angel! He Fell, and his wings remained in the sky due to some warping... thing.

The Angel thing is trickier, but I think he would have been hailed as an Angel by some for bringing the bickering of the constellations to an end - or at least a break. Either that or all the constellations became Angels after 'dying' - it was the 1st Matrix after all.

As Archangel says, it looks like he worked for the Frenchman at some point, and then betrayed him.

So Seraph didn't accept to be deleted and he went to work for the Merovingian. But now it seems that Seraph betrayed the Merovingian. I think that the only thing that happened is that the machines told Seraph if he wanted to work in the Matrix as a normal program, and he accepted. That is why Seraph is doing what he does in Reloaded and Revolutions. His job is to guard the doors.
(Just a theory)
