»Why is neo the one«

some say neo is the one cause he jumped into smith, and there are many other reasons why, but here is what i think it is

in m1 neo is computer hacker/programer, and so he is used to cheating the system, useing back doors, or doin things that normal people can't on a computer, bending and sometimes breackin the rules of a computer

well if u look at it the matrix is just a high teck computer program, neo being his computer name forgot his name tomas anderson and became neo, so just as the matix is a computer program neo can bend or breack the rules, just like he did before.

i think neo was the one before he jumped into smith, cos he saved trin remember?

But i still can't understand why saving trinity makes him the one? I mean anyone could do that right?
But i do know why he's the one, like what the architect, morpheus said. "You here because you know something...", "You live is the result of the unbalanced equation.. bla.. bla.." (Couldn't help it, so there you go!)

Neo's always the one. However, they did not 'know' that he was the one until later.

Neo saving Morpheus doesn't make him the one because Trinity helped. Him saving Trinity in M1 doesn't make him the one because, like you said, anyone could have done that. Even dodging bullets doesn't seem to make him the one because in Enter The Matrix Niobe and Ghost have learnt to do that too.

What makes him the one in my opinion is that he manages to fight an agent and win. Quite awesome really; he dies during the fight and still manages to whoop Smith's ass

Considering Morpheuses and Tank's reaction, saving Trinity was special, but at that moment he still wasn't the One, or... he still was not aware of being the One.

So why is Neo the One?

- because the unbalanced equation has increasingly flawed the mechanism supressing the human subconscious knowledge of a world beyond the mind-world of the Matrix.

- because his neural-kinetics are way above normal

- because Neo is a special mind who is constantly growing his consciousness

- because, with Trinity's help, Neo feels that his virtual death in M1 is not real and he can overcome this death.
That is the moment that he fully understands the virtuality of the Matrix. He has come to not only bend the rules of the Matrix, he can now break them. He has lifted the veil of virtuality pulled over people's eyes and can look beyond it (-> code) and manipulate it.

It is similar to the principle of enlightenment in eastern philosophies and religions. Enlightenment means coming to a full understanding of the one-ness of the universe. This understanding cannot be taught, it is not a matter of the intellect. You as a whole have to experience it yourself to understand it.
Imagine that you have never experienced the warmth of the sun touching your skin. Even if someone explained to you how it feels, you wouldn't really know it until you have felt it youself.

That is why the Oracle didn't just tell him "you are the One". Even if he would have theoretically known it, he still wouldn't have been the One. He has to experience it by overcoming his virtual death.

And in Revolutions he learns to look beyond the virtuality of the real world (beautifully expressed in the switching between Neo's vision and our vision of the machine city) and in the end experiences full enlightenment.

K. The matrix movies I think failed to explain the theory of the one, what it is, etc. It comes from the source okay, what else? I think "the one" is quite relative. Look at it like this: Neo only decides to do "one"-like things when he is about to die. The sentinels, stoping bullets, jumping into smith, and killing smith. I don't think there objectively is the one anywhere. It's quite relative. Neo I think does not want to be what the oracle and morpheus describe as "the one", but does what he must to save himself and Zion. This is part of the reason he did not go to the door on the right. He rejects all programs, even "the one" while still defeating agents. He's a piece of work. It's funny though, morpheus only got him out of the matrix because he thought he was the one, when he wasn't yet, and, I think still is not objectively, at the end of revolutions, which did kick ass.

Yeah but try to remember the scene.
Before that, he was convinced that he was not the one.
He does a few surprising things like,
- Entering a government building.
- Asking morpheus to get up (Now this i don't understand)
When morpheus lands on the rooftop, neo struggles with his rope, but as neo looks up and says, 'trinity', you see morpheus face like saying, 'he is the one'.
The heli crashes and tank says 'he is the one' by just looking at the events.
Maybe something in the code told him so but how did morpheus knew? Trinity always knew so i don't have any doupts about that.
I still don't get it ya'll.

neo is the one because he is. its not because of an act he preforms or a fight he gets in or being in love. He is jsut the one, there is something special about the way his mind works that ties him into the machines.

Why is neo the one? That's easy, cuz "Neo" can be rescrambled into "One".. it be silly for Morpheus to be the One...
