Originally, I thought maybe bane was saying to Neo "The past, the Flesh and see your enemy" which, if you even listen to it without the backround noise and clear it, it what it apparently sounds like he is saying.

What if he is REALLY saying "Look past the flesh and see your enemies". Perhaps a hint of things to come? Maybe a cool new anti-virus like power for Neo?

Methinks you might have a bad copy, mine is clear as crystal

The actual lines are (Video in brackets)

(green WB titles)
Agent Smith's Voice: "Mr. Anderson"

(neo's face - no blindfold)
Neo: "Who are you?"

(bane's face - looking a little worse for wear)
Bane: "Look past the flesh and see your enemy"

(The view changes from Bane's face to a fuzzy orange image of Agent Smith's face - presumable Neo "looking past the flesh")

(Neo's face)
Neo: "It's impossible"

(So much for Neo copping and eye-fry in the chair as suggested in the dodgy scripts)

The eye-frying happens after this scene... Smile

I believe that Smith is telling Neo that the people that he thinks are humans (in Zion) are not really 'on his side. "Look past the flesh and
see your enemy" is referring to the citizens of Zion. They are Neo's enemy.

I believe that somehow Smith ends up in a hero role in these movies. Like Darth Vader and Gollum he redeems himself in the end of the trilogy.

In one of the teaser trailers Morpheus says, "He fights for us?" with a very surprised look on his face. In the final battle scene where Smith has infected all of the people in the Matrix and he and Neo are on the rainy street. I believe he is talking about Smith fighting
for the citizens of Zion.

So if Smith, Morpheus, Trinity, etc are now on the same side, that means Neo is the enemy. He seems to team up with the machines, sentinels, and that huge orb. He tells the Orb that he will not fail to destroy Smith. Why in the world would a "good" Neo team up with the machines?

I also think that Smith might be human. In M1 he says, "Humans are a disease, a virus." And in Reloaded his literally IS a virus. He shows a lot of emotions to, laughing, anger, etc. Neo is unemotional like a machine.

You think thats maybe more or less to do with Reeve's acting?

Maybe, but in the dodgy script I saw, it states that Neo is blinded while in the chair as he returns from the matrix for the first time. Which is obviously not possible if he's having this little chat with bane.

On a side note...
I don't mean to spoil the "Return of the King" for anyone who hasn't read the books....

<-------------Return of the King SPOILER-------------------->

Bono, Gollum does NOT redeem himself. After leading the two hobbits through Shelob's Lair, it is his act of lust for the ring that causes him to attack Frodo who is invisible, having put on the ring at Mt. Doom, unwilling to destroy it. This necessity for the ring causes Gollum to perish in the fires of Mt. Doom after Frodo and him struggle. I assure you, this is not an act of goodness.

<----------------------------------------------------------------->

Vader on the other hand is redeemed.
