This is my first post on the forums. I've been reading the forums for a while, and I thought I'd add my two testicles.
My friend and I have discussed for a while about what each character represents within a computer; ignoring any significance of names and religous refrences. Basicly this list is just based on what they do in each of the movies. Also note, that the programs they are being compared to are completely diffrent in the first film from what they are in the second/third.
THE MATRIX
Agents=basic system safeguards.
- They fight simple viruses and correct minor problems
Smith=slightly more advanced anti-virus program
- Has the desire to improve himself and is more in-control than the other agents
Morpheus=Virus (not sure of correct name for type)
- Breaks into the system and steals programs, then turns them to his cause (creates more viruses)
Trinity=?
Tank=?
Dozer=?
Rest of Nebachenezzer(sp?) crew=worm viruses
-used for gathering informaion and try to hide from detection
The Oracle=?
Neo (prior to death)=High-end program infected by morpheus and turned into sort-of-a trojan horse virus
-was one of the best hackers in the world, was then taken by morpheus and fought with him, hiding his power until it was activated.
Neo (after rebirth)=Most powerful virus in existance
-can destroy programs almost at will, and controls part of the system.
THE MATRIX RELOADED/REVOLUTIONS
Neo=The ultimate anti-virus program
-Unlike in M1 he does not destroy any programs, and he aids the computer
Smith=The ultimate virus
-he was created from part of the untimate anti-virus (Neo) and is able to infect nearly every program, eventualy gaining enough power to infect the whole system.
Trinity=?Anti-Virus-Maintainance program?
Morpheus=?
The Marovingean(sp?)=Administration program
-controls most improtant activity in the matrix & decides what comes in/goes out of the system.
Persephonie=?
The Twins=?
Agents=out-of-date anti-viruses
-Useless against more powerful programs, and still prevent the actions of operatives, which could be useful to the machines.
The Oracle/Architect=central processor
-together they determine the actions of the system
Seraph(sp?)=Password protection
-he can't realy do anything to disable viruses, but he does prevent access to certain programs unless he is bypassed by an advanced virus (such as smith) or if the correct password is entered (he determines someone is worthy to see the oracle after a fight).
Sati=User
-She isn't part of the system (or at least she isn't from the system), and she seems to have control over its functions at the end of M3.
The Trainman=program used to regulate and conduct the transfer of data into and out of the system through the train station (cable)
The Keymaker=old maintainance program
-can go anywhere in the system, but has likely been replaced, and is marked for deletion because he is out of date, and a security risk
Matrix Code=Computer data
The source=Electricity or highly compressed data
Okay... I think that's most of the characters. Please tell me what you think my unknowns are, and any characters/places that I missed. Also, if I made any mistakes tell me what they are, and why, and I will probably change it. In adition, i just thought that i'd mention that I know next-to-nothing about computer programs, and I am writing this at 1 AM, so please tell me about any incorrect spelling, or misnaming of programs.
NOW, ON TO THE THEORIES.
These are my throries, based on relatively little knowledge of computers, or anything outside the movies, so please, feel free to scrutanize them, and tell me how wrong I am.
HOW NEO STOPPED THE SENTINELS
As the sentinels approached him Neo said "something's diffrent" (may not be exact words, I only saw the movie once). After he left the architect's room the Architect realised that Sentinels were closing in on his ship, he would die, Zion would be destroyed, no one would be left to aquaint the replacements with the real world, and thus, they would die. This would leave no way for the next 'One' to leave the matrix, nor anyone else. Eventualy whatever the machines were trying to prevent by using Zion would happen, they would they would have no way to stop it, and basicly, their perfect world with everything under control would collapse, and they would be screwed.
So... To prevent this Neo's program was improved, thus improving his mental abilities in the real world. This gave him a subconcious understanding of the source (what I believe to be the controled form of electricity, filled with information), and when the sentinels approached he could feal them/see the source in them approaching in his subconcious mind (like an image that you think of in your mind without actualy picturing it). When he touched the sentinel he made his first contact with the source since his upgrade. He had never felt it before, and didn't know how to control it. He destroyed the sentinel because that was what he was focusing on, but in the process he used to much effort, and pushed his conciousness into the sentinel's system. His signal was then processed into the machine's network, where it was left to be identified and sorted by the trainman.
Normaly a mind cannot live without the body (M1), but because Neo's conciousness was now in the machine's system they reinforced the link that Neo had made in order to keep his mind in their system so that they could learn what it is.
Anyway, there's my major theory, please tell me if it is right or not. I'll post more later when it isn't 1:30AM.
