For a simulated world to be created (I.e. a world totally simulated with no physicaly connected humans) It is actually mathematically incredibly likely.
Take for example the rate that computer prosessing power is rapidy increasing every ten years or so the price of manufaturing reduces by roughly half and the rate of progress doubles. It is conseivable that within thirty years computers will be able to process a near infinate amount of data. Even if this were to happen in hundreds of years, its is still incredibly likely.
For the purpose of argument lets think of this as true.
It would be possible to create worlds within our desktop computers (or whatever the technoligy is then). Eventually this would become acessible widely and people could run their own worlds for their own research or pleasure. The popularity of these simulators is near definate as all humans have some kind of disire for infinate power, also think of the popularity of god sims, such as populus and the sims.
Say in a thousand years, earth has a population of five billion, and numerious space colonies say this adds up to a conservative six billion.
One third of the population has a society or world simulator, each programmed with every bit of detail we enjoy in our world, humations who beleive they think or even do think.
So there are 2 billion simulated worlds (a very conservative estimate)
That leaves us with a 1 in 2 billion chance of living in the real world.
And (given the assumed world population of each world as averagely being 6 billion) gives you a 1 in 36,000,000,000,000,000,000 chance of being a "real" human.
And with the infinate number or planets in the "real" world it is definate that atleast one civilisation would be able to create world simulators.
This is just my opinion, but you cant deny it's scary and very possible.
Id be very grateful for people's thoughts on the subject. Thankyou for bothering to read this. Smile
