The movies are full of allegory, and are meant to be interpreted by people in their own way
Yes -- we are controlled...
Yes -- we are slaves - to a system...
Yes -- Esoteric thought does teach us that reality is an illusion...
Yes -- we are only told what the powers that be want us to know....
AND I feel that Yes, Mankind is capable of many great things if we just put our minds to it ----- There is NO spoon!!!

They probably believe that we are controlled, as citizens of Earth and the Matrix story is their interpretation of that control ~ A story which has of course captured many imaginations~ which makes the Matrix an excellent medium for getting their message across
