[Enter The Matrix] Sparks: "And for the record, when I cart your bodies back to Zion, do you prefer cremation or the gardens?" Ghost: "Sparks, your faith in us remains a source of personal inspiration." Sparks: "Well, I am what I am and I do what I can." Niobe: "Then, can you shut up and hit the button?" Sparks: "Your wish, Captain, my Captain, is my keystroke, colon, double backlash, execute, command."

Agent Smith, Darth Vader, Gollum!

All three of these characters are villains in their respective trilogies.
I believe all three are redeemed in the end. Vader kills the Emperor in Return of the Jedi
and allows Luke to save the galaxy. Gollum does his thing in Return of the King (I won’t say anymore for those that haven’t read the books).
And I believe that Smith somehow becomes a heroic figure in the Matrix movies. I have a hunch that Smith is human. In the first movie he says, “Humans are a disease, a virus…” In Reloaded he literally IS a virus. He also seems to show a lot more emotion than Neo, Trinity, etc…
More on Smith: it appears that he has taken over everybody in the Matrix in the final
street showdown. It also looks like his abilities are exactly equal to Neo’s based on the
Burly Brawl and the clips from the Revolutions trailer.
I love the theories that are being proposed out there.
- Matrix in a matrix
- Matrix births true AI
- Zion population are really machines.
I’m not really sure how Smith being human fits into any of them.
I think the great thing about these movies is that they give us a chance to think. To
come up with our own opinions and ask some questions. Kind of like giving your
perspective on a painting or a sculpture. Real art.
Side note: Why in the world is Neo helping the Matrix fight Smith? Why does he tell that Orb he won’t fail?

Because if he fails, he would meet the Architect again.

Another tidbit to support that Agent Smith is redeemed in the trilogy is a clip for Revolutions at the end of the "Enter the Matrix" game. In the teaser there is a clip of Morpheus saying, "He fights for us?" He has a surprised/shocked look on his face. I believe that he is referring to Smith. At that very point he realizes that Smith is fighting for humanity, not Neo.

As far as I can ascertain, SMITH is assimilating every program in the Matrix so in essensce he is spreading a virus through the entire Matrix, it will crash so looking at it from that point of view Smith is indeed fighting for Zion; whether he is totally aware of that fact ... well thats another debate
He wants "EVERYTHING" ~ ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY..
Irelly do hope he is redeemed or you are all going to have a very sad woman on your hands......!!!
