hmm this also brings up another problem with that 'goliath' comic.
the guy was in a spaceship around the earth, which means the machines got a spaceship out of the cloud layer...

Continuity in Comic Books

You know one of the best things that comic books have going for them is their continuity, being that they're serial. I dislike how wirters often throw continuity away, especially when they're dealing with characters or concepts that they didn't create.

I know writing in a spaceship isn't the biggest sin in the world, but that writer obviously didn't think about the whole "scorched sky" concept which is very important to the Matrix. I'm probably overreacting, but I find that kind of thing annoying when I read comics.

call me crazy, but it could be that we are being shown that the machines are more humane than humanity. In the Second Renaissance, it was the humans who, primarily due to envy and intolerance, could not abide peace. Maybe the machines want to create a peace, and is waiting until humanity itself is ready. In the meantime, free energon for everyone!

perhaps it happened this way...

as we see in 2nd rennaisance...the machines said ar the UN "your flesh is a relic...give up your flesh and a new world awaits you...we demand it"

perhaps this is an indication that the human leaders surrendered the entire human race to be plugged into the matrix or the machines would have exterminated them altogether...

so in a sense the humans chose to be in the matrix rather than be wiped out

machines probably already tried that and something far about the clouds will just DESTROY it for the fear of being seen. nothing accept "human" craft like the LOGOS (the ship neo and trininity was on) can barely reach the cloud level AND even neo and trinitiy didn't get to see into far outer space (because neo didn't intend for them to go into outer space Shocked ... he may know that something is out there/trinity just wanted to see the sky and nothing beyond it ... neo just wanted to get away from the machines).

there may be something out there that prevents anything from leaving or at least seeing it.

The hovercrafts are as vulnerable as the sentinels in the storm.
Remember that the machines created Zion (this is the 6th version), so they also equipped the humans with the hovercrafts, so if they had the technology to make hovercrafts go unaffected through the clouds they would use it on their own units.

The movie show very vague aspects of the machines' life outside the matrix
It's only focused on the relationship between humans and machines ,and the one between humans and humans.

If Matrix 4 will be made, maybe we'll find out more...

The Architect says that the One can choose the people to create Zion. So the Machines allow humans to create Zion. Whether the machines give the Zionites their technology is unspecified. However, I think to maintain the illusion that the humans are escaping on their own, I think the machines would make the humans develop their own technology.
