I was watching The Matrix Revisited, that documentary DVD, and I heard los Bros. Wachowski commenting on certain difficulties of shooting The Matrix in Sydney, because they wanted the city to look like it could be any city, anywhere.

Well, this leads me to believe that inside the Matrix, there are no such things as countries or continents, but rather, everyone trapped in the Matrix lives in "The City," a randomly generated dungeon, if you will, that everyone exists in, but at the same time, doesn't. A Saudi trapped in the Matrix would interpret "The City" differently than an African-American would, but in the end they both live in "The City," just in a confusing multi-layered Truman Show situation.

The Merovingian, being a rogue program, has his own little hideout somewhere else in the digital world, and possibly other unknown rogue programs have created their own little islands in the Matrix, but the ordinary "batteries" live withen "The City."

I dunno. Anyone wanna poke holes in this theory? I'm just spouting random nonsense.

I think the Wachowski brothers wanted to make a timeless movie.

Look at the places the movie plays:
A future destryed world (Zion)
Cities that could by any city
The mountains
A castle

Could you watch the movies in 20 years? Yes, because the time within the Matrix is just a created reality.

A timeless movie with timeless dialogs.
