Matrix---a lot of digital space on many or one hard drive containing operating system, programs...etc
Neo---The one program blah blah antivirus of some sort
Oracle---an intuitive program designed to perfect matrix by eliminating the systemic anomaly
Keymaker---also a program designed for creating passwords i.e. keys...or something...

Interesting question! I had to think of it this way, too, to completely understand it. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a good way to explain the Matrix without using computer terms, so those people around me without computer experience are still confused.

Anomoly, I like your ideas, but I have a few comments:

Agents: firewall -- I'm not so sure, anomoly. Smith was an agent who became a virus. The agents were sent into the matrix to deal with unneeded and unwanted files. Could be considered an anti-virus program. In this case you would have to see, as far as the Matrix itself is concerned, that Neo and the other 'freed' who go back into the Matrix are the virus. After all, it isn't truly their world...it is, in simpler terms, a virtual reality game for them. The are the ones trying to remove npc's, as it were. (NPCs are non-playing characters in gaming terms...in Matrix terms, those still in the pod aren't the ones playing; the agents and 'freed' are playing the game around them.

This would make Neo and the other 'freed,' more akin to a worm, which is attempting to duplicate itself (by removing more people from the pods and making them players in the game.) The difference between a worm and a virus is that a virus makes changes to a file while a worm is a <i>self-replicating</i> virus. Since the people who are in pods are npcs, they are not programs as the agents are. {Did that make any sense to anyone? I think I'm beginning to confuse myself.}

I can see the 'freed' as hackers, though, as well...kind of the same idea as above, along, of course, with the fact that they actually do have to hack into the system to do anything at all.

Zion, though...it's interesting that you see Zion as a recycle bin or quarantine. My understanding was that when a file is deleted it is erased entirely, not simply moved to Zion. To me Zion represents, more completely, a haven in the world outside of the Matrix. The matrix needs to control everything, therefore it wants there to be NO Zion.

Another idea I've discussed with some people is that the Merovingian is a bit like a bus, in hardware terms, as he mentions that his function is as a director of information. All information comes through him and he decides where to put it...so he could also be seend as a router or switch. Or, perhaps, a firewall.

By matrix: windows, do you mean operating system? What about, perhaps, bios?

trainstation and trainman:install wizard -- hey...I hadn't thought about that. Very nice.

keymaker:cookies or passwords -- yeah, or possibly encryption software, since it creates the 'keys' that open the doors, or ports.

my problem is that i only have very basic knowlege of computer so i was trying to put into the context of things i know about

i hope it builds a platform for those of you who have more knowlege of these things that i ...

my ideas around the freed and the agents as hackers and firewalls respectively come about because of the purpose they serve in basic terms in the film...we are told that the freed "hack" into the matrix and so by design the agents are to prevent this and so i thought of firewalls that way

as for smith...i suppose he could be a trojan programme of a re-written anti virus which was initially designed to stop the "freed" viruses....
