... and his female companion was a Trinity? Remember what the Oracle said to Trinity, that she would fall in love with the One. So was the scene in the washroom where the lady demanded a kiss just pointless? No. She wanted to be in love with the One as well.

Now this is where it gets interesting.

The Merovingian asks for the eyes of the Oracle. Trinity puts a gun to his head. The Merovingian, seeing that Trinity really is in love with him, grants their request and sets the One free.

The Merovingian was not in love with his companion, that is obvious. He knows that is why he failed.

I hope some of you understand.

Neo isn't the only one that gets a kiss from Persephone. In Enter The Matrix she also kisses Niobe and Ghost. It has been said that she is a program that gathers on human emotions.

Unfortunately no one can be told what The Matrix is...You have to see it for yourself.

She still must have a purpose. It wasn't just chance that she got stuck with that one.

the Merovingian is an analysis program written around cause-and-effect. his companion is written around emotion. both were written to help shape the Matrix into somehting that would last.

NARF!

besides, he's a program, not a previous One. if he was in possession of that kind of power, why wouldn't he face Neo himself?

Ok ok, I found some evidence against this. The One is who freed the first of the people in Zion. He didn't die, he didn't become a program. Only our Neo, the real One, became a program.

But what happens after? Could he still become a program after creating Zion?

Although I'm not so confidant that the Architect is telling the truth, there must have been more ones before Neo, because the machines seem prepared to expect Neo.

As for the Merovingian... here's why he COULD be a former one (remember, he's not Neo, just another anamoly returned in the matrix)

Since all the ones before neo had to reinsert themself into the prime program and return to the source, there is a chance that their code (not thier actual physical form) can go into exile and return to the matrix.

I believe Seraph and the Merovingian are other ones... Smith talks about a former encounter with Seraph and Persephone says the Merovingian used to be like Neo. BOTH Seraph's and the Merovingian's names relate to Angels, Seraph being a good angel, the Merovingian referring to the Kings of France who were said to be decendants of a fallen angel (i.e. bad)

So, these angel references could refer to them being former ones. However, they have returned in code form (which I believe Neo will someday do, especially after hearing the Oracles last comments to Sati)

I've explained who Persephone was on another thread, but in short, she is just an exile program known for her beauty (who did have a purpose in creating the matrix) but got deleted and saved by the Merovingian.

As to why the Merovingian doesn't fight Neo, he doesn't need to, he's trying to take over in another way... he has power elsewhere, almost like a mobster or politician. he he. We can see that he tries to mess up the path of the one quite a bit, by kidnapping the keymaker and holding Neo in the train station. These are ways he can gain control of the Matrix. Remember, he is still referred to as a dangerous program... Just because Neo uses force, not everyone who wants power does.

Seraph, who I believe is a former one, chooses to protect the oracle, who I believe once was the mother of the matrix, but who now fights for peace (and she even leans on the side of the humans, although not entirely, since she did help guide neo down the path the machines wanted him to go down, but she is a free thinker).

The Merovingian does have a great knowledge of the matrix and of cause and effect relationships. He does not believe in choice, however, as he states. Maybe because he was lured to the source too, thus relinquishing most of his power. Oh well, he'll still be around and try to take over, maybe that could be a side story if there's every another animatrix or something.

I hope this makes sense Screwy and puts things into perspective more.

my theory is that the merovingian is a previous oracle programme who was written to find a solution to the matrix collapsing...the oracle found the solution before the merovingian and therefor he was told to return to the source to be deleted but instead choose exile in the matrix...

this is why the merovingian says "if you take something from me you will pay the price"

this means that the oracle took his purpose and now he wants to get revenge first by deleting her shell and secondly by obtaining her "vision"

I believe that The Merovingian is not a previous One. becasue of what he said to Neo, after his fight with his bodyguards "That i have survied your previous predassesors."

That statment make me think that he is just a program assigned to the matrix, and that he has had dealing with the previous Ones before Neo.

Persephone is saying that Merov used to have the same passion and feeling for her that Neo has for Trin.

I believe that the point being made is regarding the nature of power. It is, in effect, a warning to Neo to observe what could or would happen to the One given their ability and position. This position of the One is perhaps mirrored in the Merovingian who, regardless of who he turns out to be, enjoys the power he has garnered over the centuries and has, in his struggle to maintain his power base, been corrupted by it.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. No matter how innocent or, how good one's initial intentions, once placed in a position of power, in order to maintain that power one must do unpleasant things at times. This would naturally weaken the moral fibre of even the strongest individual. This has happened to the Merovingian.

While not directly telling Neo et al to beware the pitfalls of position and power, there are, none the less, enough clues for Neo to understand what would happen to him if he felt he needed to take up a position as a rogue program in the Matrix. In order to carry on, Neo too would eventually become jaded and corrupt.

It was one more incident that Neo observed and filed away in his growing understanding of the nature of the reality he found himself struggling with.
