I disagree with what the guy wrote on this site about the name 'Matrix' being derived from one of the brothers sexual preferences.

I think its comes from a biological term

Mitrochondria is the "power house" of your cells
within them is a liquid which transports the ATP around.

that liquid is called 'Matrix'

I think thats where the name came from.

From a chat with the Brothers:

Question: Is the title "The Matrix" related to the mitochondrial matrix located in cells; the site of cell respiration, the creation of energy in humans?

WachowskiBros: Like the movie itself, there is a lot of word play, a lot of hidden other meanings, a lot of multiple meanings. Besides that, we also like the definition, the mathematical definition of the use of matrix, or the use of it in terms of a woman's womb

now...while the bros. don't usually (or ever) name things randomly with no real purpose, i'd rather just believe that movie is called the matrix because that word is sweet.

I once read a study that found that products with an x in the name seem to sell better.

The name almost certainly came from the William Gibson novel Neuromancer:

"The matrix has its roots in primitive arcade games," said the voice-over, "in early graphics programs and military experimentatlon with cranial lacks." On the Sony, a two-dimensional space war faded behind a torest of mathematically generated ferns, demonstrating the spatial possibilities of logarithmic spirals: cold blue military footage burned through, lab animals wired into test systems, helmets feeding into fire control circuits of tanks and war planes. "Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematic concepts . . . A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human svstem. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. [Neuromancer, 51]

A matrix is an array of numbers in rows and columns, mathematically speaking. In my math class, we always end up studying matrices whenever a Matrix movie comes out.

Here's a math pun for you: every single movie or video game that ripped off "bullet time" could be considered a derivative of the Matrix.

Matrices are the main construct for doing 3D programming. Matrices are how points are transformed, mainpulated, and scaled. In a three dimensional world, I work with virtual reality, such as 'the matrix', matrices would serve a fundamental purpose.

Make sense also to biology version about mitochondria makes sense as well think about it the power house of the cell machine draining humans as a power source so I think the title was choosen because it fit so many possibilities. Thumbup

Ok, since the dictionary has been consulted and the maths and science people have given their definition, here's the musical one.
A matrix is an integral part of the atonal system, particularily the 12 tone system. In this, a sequence of any of the 12 tones, ( C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B) with no notes repeating. This is placed at the top of a grid. The pattern is reversed, retrograde, turned upside-down, inversion and then you have retrograde inversions too.
The 'music' made by this is always in discord, there are no chords, no sounds that fit the normal and generally appriciated music peopole hear pre- and post this style of music. It appears a if there is no order, simply chaos, but really the order is so well hidden and so much an essential part of the construction and development of the sounds you here, that you would never know it was there.
I hope this adds to your enjoyment of the Matrix trilogy, if not you now have another piece of trivia to add to your collection.
