»Smith in M1«

I have seen the movie so many times it is amazing I just thought of this now. In M1, Agent Smith is trying so desperately to get the codes to Zion, thus getting inside Zion and destroying it. Isn't that a sort of free will? The machines wouldn't program an agent to break into Zion. I just don't understand it or even know where to begin. Of course it paves the way for Smith eventually getting into the real world and the last 2 movies wouldn't be right without it... But why was he thinking of getting into Zion inthe first place?

Because the Machines wanted to find Zion, i.e. this was not Smith's own personal agenda, it was that of the machines

I n the first matrix Smith was still part of the machine thing doing their duty or sum safeguarding stuff.He wasn't a virus then.So he was serving the machines by trying to get the access codes.Had he got the access codes then Zion wud have been gone lot earlier.

they already knew where Zion is. i think they wanted the access codes so that destroyinig Zion this time around would be quick and painless (they wouldn't have to worry about the outer permeter of defenses).

Okay, makes sense. But I just thought the Agents were only programmed to keep order inside the Matrix. I didn't understand why any Agent would think of doing this...

Yes and no The Agents were a level of control. Smiths actions and words were more of a vehicle to keep the movie going.

I don't think that smith personally wanted those codes but by delivering the one with the codes to (whomever) he might have had a deal that would either remove his program from the matrix and put it in a more desireable place or rewrite his program to give him more control over the matrix. I don't know for sure its just a theory.

But smith didn't have to tell Morpheus at all what he wanted because as soon as they hacked his brain the matrix itself or whatever program was running the hack would have found the information it was looking for.

They already have the info on Zion...hence how they know exactly where Zion is. But the agents (Smith) in M1 wants access codes to Zion's MAINFRAME. To me, that is where all the people that open up the docking bay for the ships (all the people jacked in that are in the construct at the beginning of Reloaded running the touch screen system) and also probably where they broadcast the matrix to all the ships, almost like having a pirated version of the Matrix (cracked software) or where all the programming that is sent to the ships come from, because the agents can "move in and out of of any piece of software still hardwired to the Matrix"...so if they were given Admin access to Zion's mainframe, they could shut EVERYTHING down.
