OK. For the sake of argument, let's assume that the current incarnation of Zion is at least 100 years old, as Morpheus says in his pre-orgy speech that "for 100 years we have battled these machines."
Furthermore, let's also assume that Real World time and Matrix time move at the same speed. (i.e. if you leave the Matrix, stay in the real world for a year and then re-enter the Matrix, a year will have passed in the Matrix) We can assume this because Neo's body (and anyone else freed from the Matrix) is the same age as his residual self image, and because if it wasn't true then if you leave the Matrix for a day (a real world day) and then come back, years could have passed in the Matrix, making things very difficult for the Zionists to keep track of, besides screwing with the continuity of the movies.
Therefore, we can assume that the Matrix world had to have compensated for those hundred years, and that the Matrix world timeline (for the current Matrix/Zion incarnation) had to have begun sometime in the early 1900s, if not earlier! Do you think that this could fit with the continuity of the Matrix stories? could there have been Zionists "jacking in" to the Matrix through old telephones like this:?
And agents wearing fedoras and and carrying around revolvers like old timey FBI guys, like this:?
What do you think? There's no real way to tell, but it would be pretty cool.

This is an argument for "Zion is a fake"
If Zion is about 100 years old it is quite impossible that a few people can build a city near the earth's core with all the technology and ships you see in the movie just within 100 years:
*They don't even have good food
*They never ate tasty wheat
*You see them dancing and living in a quite primitive environment running around in rags and living in stone houses.
*Their only weapon against the sentinels is EMP
*The freeing out of the Matrix and inserting into Zion started about 100 years ago, thus a lot of freed persons have skills like 1900-1980. Not too high.
Right now this is only explainable if Zion is part of the Matrix AND recycles with the Matrix. Thus it could have been destroyed 5 times already. Even Neo could look the same the last times.
