-Zion

-Etymology: Middle English Sion, from Old English, citadel in Palestine which was the nucleus of Jerusalem, from Late Latin, from Greek SeiOn, from Hebrew SIyOn
Date: 14th century

1 a : the Jewish people : ISRAEL b : the Jewish homeland that is symbolic of Judaism or of Jewish national aspiration c : the ideal nation or society envisaged by Judaism

This is from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

--I thought it was interesting that the last homeland of the human race would be the EXACT name of the Jewish homeland.

(I am not Jewish and do not know too much about it but please correct if I am wrong)

Thanks, Derek

That may very well be right, but i think it is much more likely that Zion is reffering the biblical last city of the world. but who really knows?

The Isreal is the focal point of revelations and Zion so they are one in the same.

Also Revelations - Armegedon- Revolutions - War for Zion

Well, actually Zion is the Hill on which the Temple of Jeruslem was built. There have been 2 temples of Jerusalem. The 1st built in the 10th century BC by King Solomon, was destroyed by the Babylonians in 587 BC. The Temple of Herod was rebuilt in about 20 BC and destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. The only part that survived that still stands is the Western Wall (Wailing Wall). This was not part of the temple, but one of its surrounding walls. Where most people believe the temple was built, now stands the Al-Aqsa mosque. <P>Zion and Sion are just various spellings for the hill, that has changed as the word went from Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English, etc. Zion, Sion, Siyyon, Seion are various spellings of the same name for the hill. Also, the hill had various names given to it, as in Sirion, Shenir, etc. The top of this hill was exposed stone, that gives us the basis for the terms "Rock of Sion/Zion, etc". Zionism came about after the Diaspora, the dispersion of exiled Jews outside of Israel to Babylonia after the sixth century B.C. The references to Sion and the Rosecrucians have their basis with various noble and religious lines and factions, most noteably the Merovigians and Theophrastus Philippus Aureolus Bombastus von Honenheim, but most references refer to him in his more common name, Paracelsus.

2=0=x+2 anyone? ;p

Has Zion got anything to do with "promised land"?

The hope to start a Jewish state at Zion, might have in the past been broadly seen as a "promised land", but Zion itself is the hill.
You have to spend more time than a 5 minute google search to find the real meanings sometimes, especially on subjects like religion, philosophy, etc. ;p

About 95% of the stuff you find on-line is drivel.
