Having visited many sites looking for reviews of 'Revolutions', i was left very disappointed as precious few reviews did justice to the trilogy. Most were penned by authors and critics who are otherwise very reliable, but they seem to have either completely misunderstood the Matrix
or they submitted a review just for the heck of it. Blatant Blasphemy is the only way it can be described....and so here i pen my(and, i hope, the brothers') theory on the Matrix.
In the not too distant future, man perfects the technology of Artificial Intelligence....the science whereby machines can be taught to think for themselves, to learn from theire mistakes so as not to repeat them, to evolve. Soon, machines get ambitious and a war breaks out between man and the machines. Humans are defeated in this war and the surivors are forced to flee. These survivors find an elaborate version of an underground bunker and they develop it into ZION, the last human refuge.
This, of course, does not happen in the blink of an eye, and in the time that it takes the humans to establish Zion, the machines extend their rule to cover the surface of the Earth. Soon enough, machines are the only things on the surface of the Earth and most human survivors live in Zion, which is closer to the centre of the Earth, and is hence warmer (as per human body needs) than the surface. The surface is actually much colder than normal, because just before losing the war, humans used a last bit of technology to develop storm clouds to block out sunlight. This weather control device was then manipulated so the the clouds are permanent, and then, presumably, destroyed. The chief source of the machines' power was sunlight, and this was blocked out by the storm clouds. Now, the machines need some form of energy to survive. Hence, they devise a solution.
Not all humans escaped to Zion. Some were caputred by the machines, if not killed. The DNA characteristics of these humans were then obtained and they were liquefied. Using the DNA info, the machines bred new humans (much like conceiving and giving birth), complete with the plug in holes in their bodies, and plugged them in to The Matrix. These humans are in a dream state (in the real world, ie, the world of the machines) from birth. In the Matrix however, they live like normal humans beings in world (which seems to them) as normal as our present world.
Hence the human bodies reamained in the dream state in the real world, while the human minds were plugged in to the matrix. In the matrix, every human mind is assigned a Residual Self Image, which is an exact image of what the person would look like at any given age. This information is derived by the machines from the DNA info of each human and is supplied to the human via the connections to his body. In the real world the body, needs food to survive. This food is supplied by connections to other parts of the body. Initially, this food was the liqufied remains of any war survivors. Later, this food became the liqefied remains of any person who died in the matrix. if a person dies in the matrix, his mind stops living. his brain does not supply give the heart an instruction to beat. Hence he dies in the real worls as well. his body is diconnected from the matrix and liquefied, to be supplied to other bodies. To balance the death rate, the machines continually use DNA information to breed new humans.
So hence the machines have a huge network of human bodies jacked in to The Matrix. The Matrix may be explained as a program which emulates a world just like our present world. In this world, everything is just like is in our present world. The only difference is, that in the Matrix, people are not real. They are bits of digital code, designed to look like humans (or specifically, the RSI of the human in question). This is quite similar to the Matrix itself, which is actaully a big block of code, that is designed to look like a normal Earth. However, jacked-in people are not the only bits of code in the matrix. In order to maintain law and order in the matrix, the machine source developed other programs. These programs are superior to human codes and are capable of feats normal codes are incapable of. Stuff like moving fast, dodging bullets, overwriting other codes with their own. These programs are known as agents.
Thus humans, in the real world are kept in a state of induced sleep. It can be said that they are actually dreaming their lives in the Matrix.
They are kept in this sleep for the sole purpose of energy derivation. Machines need energy to survive and the their only source was blocked out by storm clouds. But the human body is the single greatest generator of bioelectricity. It is this electricity that travels as neural impulses from our brains to our organs and so on. It is this electricity that the Machines harness in bulk.
The amount of electricity from one human is in itself quite magnificent. The amount of electricity from many many such humans is titanic. So the machines get the power they need.
