»The purpose of machines? Keeping humans alive!«

Heres what I gather from the movies and the animatrix series.

The machines/programs seem to all be about having purpose. Without it they really have no reason to continue existing. Right now their purpose is to keep humanity alive.
Looking at the planet as it stands; there is no way to free everyone from the matrix and have them hope to survive. The planet is very unlikely to be capable of sustaining any significant amount of life. Particularly 6 billion peoples worth.
Needless to say it could explain why the matrix will continue to exist after the final chapter in the movie.
