I have been thinking about the likelihood that Zion could even exhist. If the physical world is mostly dead, bombed out, the sky scorched, etc., where does Zion get its resources? How can they have complex technology without foundaries, laboratories, and especially natural resources. . . water, light, soil, air, plant material, minerals? If everything is dead and contaminated on the surface, how then can they manufacture anything in the subterranian world of Zion.

Then, after the war against the machines, their protective shields have been blown to bits and military machines shut down. How do they keep the surface contamination from penetrating beneath into Zion?

After all, even basic necessities like food and clothes seem ragged and rudimentary. So how then could they have such infrastructure to support a post-holocost, disutopia like Zion in the first place? How could humans even exist after a global holocost like the ravages of war shown in the Matrix when Morphious shows Neo the "real" world.

I am leaning toward a Matrix within the Matrix regarding Zion. I don't see how they could even survive.

It's been confirmed somewhere that the Wachowskis wanted Zion to overtly look like it had been built by the machines.

The machines built Zion, they supply all the necessary materials and resources to keep it running.

So if the machines built Zion and they are responsible for keeping it running . . . are the humans really free that take refuge there? Sounds like more of the Matrix within the Matrix.

Exactly. That's what Neo learns at the end of Reloaded. Zion isn't sanctuary, it's just another trap (anyone else here a Logan's Run fan?)

Yep. The only way they could really be free was to get outside into the natural world. And the sentinal that was in the sanctuary was freezing everyone.
