Has anyone wondered who controls the population in the matrix. Assuming that a couple making love leads to pregnancy, and embryos are generated based on the generic structure of its parents, then humans control the population. Also, by looking at the trailer, Im not sure that the pod city would contain 6 billion people. So, two possible explanations:
1. There are other pod cities on earth.
2. Only a small number of people in the matrix are human, the rest are programs.

Dusan I have wondered, too. Without repeating it here(because it's long as hell) here's a link to it:
The machines would have to work hand and hand with the Matrix's human population to implement population growth/replenishment. I was also thinking the machines would have to be monitoring Zion's population. If they want it to be a viable backup for the Matrix, they can't allow over-population.
Yet another population issue is this: if humanity successfully defends Zion, then overcomes the army of Sentinals, would we really want to shut down the Matrix and restore the subjugated human minds to their body immediately? I would assume Zion can only sustain a limitted number of inhabitants. And the little bit we've seen of the surface of the Earth looks quite unhospitable. How would the government of Zion plan to sustain them? Would the Matrix continue to operate (at least until Zion's population builds the infrastructure needed to terraform the world and recreate a self sustaining ecosystem capable of carrying the billions of lives still dependant on the Matrix) because it's the only way to save them?

The machines control the birth rate by allowing a woman to get pregnant or not. Haven't you ever wondered why there are so many unwanted pregnancies?
