Yeah, but Greek writing uses vowels, ancient Hebrew writing doesn't (so written in ancient Hebrew it really would be thms and smth, see).

Though looking it up quickly online, it appears Smith in written Hebrew does insert a Yod for the i so it's סימת not סמת.

Thomas in Hebrew is תום, which meant "twin" originally (though the name is not Hebrew, it is Aramaic). That's kind of interesting maybe?
