[Matrix Reloaded] Morpheus: "Everything begins with choice." Merovingian: "No. Wrong. Choice is an illusion, created between those with power, and those without."

Why did all the Smiths die when Neo became one of them?

Well one of the times Neo goes to see the Oracle she tells him Smith is his Opposite who exists to keep the balance, so when Smith turns Neo into another Smith it unbalances it, so this maybe why all the Smiths die, to keep the balance.
And also if the one returns will Smith return as well.

The Oracle didn't say that Smith exists to keep the balance.
She said:
- Smith is the opposite of Neo;
- The purpose/goal of the Architect is to balance the equation.
Remember the Source key scene : Neo vs Architect.
The Matrix is based on Mathematics. Neo is an anomaly within this mathematical harmony/perfection.
Neo is the One, i.e. the 1.
So Smith, is the -1.
The Architect/Matrix system can not actualy control Neo.
It is the same for Smith who has grown out of control of the Matrix system.
But when Smith does copy himself into Neo, we have: -1 + 1 = 0.
The Architect is now able to balance the equation.
It is his purpose, his goal, his function.
The result is that both Neo and Smith are removed from the Matrix system.
...it's also one of the many levels of the Matrix trilogy!
To complete this explanation:
during the first Matrix movie, Smith is not the opposite of Neo, he is just an Agent/element of the system.
Smith becomes the opposite of Neo at the end of Matrix 1, when Neo destroys him.
It makes me think about a steel hammer that smash a soft object. The opposite of the exact hammer shape is "printed", "carved" onto this soft object.
It's exactly what Smith said, in Matrix Reloaded, before the big fight with Neo: "...you're aware of it...", "...our connection...", "...something printed onto me...", "...it is somehow irrelevant...".
Yeah, for the moment!... But it becomes highly relevant at the end of Matrix Revolutions!
