Why this song? Because it encompasses everything the
Trilogy stands for. Anarchy (a result of the bourgeoisie’s abuse of the common man, a link to V). Post-war human experimentation (this is the link to V). New World Spirituality (the link to Sophia and Ken Wilber), Hindu/Buddhism, Karma, and most importantly Reincarnation (mixed with the idea of the chakra, which of course is the major reason why Wilber is involved).

All the Wachowski movies have been anarchistic in their own little way. If anarchistic is too harsh, libertarian (they claim assassins was rewritten) is dead on. Post-war experimentation involves the melding of man and machine…for instance, nanites that turn into homing devices, placed into people and/or using the mind to melt skin and to shut orifices closed. These themes as cool as they are really play a minor part in the Trilogy; however, are major in V.

There are two major themes that basically lead us through the trilogy: These are reincarnation (mixed with idea of the Chakra) and Karma. I’ll explain but first I want to point out the more complex version of this story. In the mid-90s, there was an animae called “Aeon Flux”, a Peter Chung project. As you may already know, Chung is the mastermind behind “Matriculated” in the Animatrix. Its delivery is more complex because we’re not given any exposition; however, it’s not layered like the Matrix and completely understandable if one knows how reincarnation “works”. The Aeon Flux episode I’m speaking of is called “Chronophasia”. It is for all intents and purposes the Matrix story without the Chakra instances. However, if this was a closer analysis of the subtext, which it is not, I would go to Chronophasia’s source: The Tibetan Book of the Dead.

Eighth day: Again, calling the deceased by name, [address him] thus:

Reincarnation & Karma:

Most people believe reincarnation is simply dying, and you wake up in cat’s body. Well, it doesn’t “work” like that. Here’s a basic layout of how it “works”.

The body dies; the spirit (shadow) has to settle past transgressions – the spirit is reborn into a world that expresses what the person was internally (six types of existence) – once all things are settled, the spirit leaves that world (reborn), so the spirit can take form again…be reborn (some say as a lower life form…some say as a human). Mind you, this is only the gist of it so I can get these points across.

Let’s say, you call yourself Thomas. You work for a software company. You don’t go to work on time. When you’re at work, you just sit in your cubicle staring at your monitor. You’re smarter than most of those idiots at your job. However, they make a lot of money and you live in a closet. To entertain yourself, you stay up all night tracking hackers or you make hacker programs for your buddies. When invited to an S&M club, you dress in normal clothes. All in all, you feel that life sucks…. Your computer life trumps your real life by a thousand fold. Later, some hot chick walks up to you and says she knows you…she knows what you’re all about…she’s like you. She understands your love for computers and perhaps is your superior (you hacked the IRS d-base?) in this computer realm. She knows the answer that you’ve been seeking. Why am I here? What is the matrix?

How do you feel after reading this? Do you feel Thomas is leading a happy and productive life…? Using his talents to help those around him…? The guy is in an S&M club talking to a hot chick about computers.

The next day, someone “FedExs” Thomas a phone, and recognizing the name on the line, he follows the instructions of a known terrorist that he’s never seen or heard in person. All this to avoid the cops.

The terrorist doesn’t even know why they’re there. But, that doesn’t stop Thomas from listening to him. In fact, Thomas (stuck in his boring life filled with conspiracy theory and computer hacking) is about to jump out the window for him. He comes to his senses and gets picked up by the cops.

The cops take him in and place a bug on him. Is the bug real? Yes. I’ll explain it later. Cops let him go; terrorists (anarchists) pick him up.

Pull out the bug.

Take a hard look…look familiar?

Anyway, Thomas proceeds to take the redpill. Where does he go? He goes nowhere and yet he moves. Scratch your head. He’s dead and now he must resolve what he has done with his life.

If some guy tracks you down on the internet, takes you to a hovel in the crap part of town and offers you pills...don’t take them. When the woman with the electric shocker machine pulls metal out of your body, it’s time to go home. So, just in case you missed the point: Thomas meets up with Morpheus, and Morpheus kills him with the redpill (Not the instance we’re watching (the first Matrix), but before the first movie, the first time, he’s just reliving it now). Pure Chronophasia. Sorry, Sophia.

So again, did Thomas have a positive life? I think most people would say, “No.” He was somewhat emasculated and really wasn’t doing what he wanted. He was arrested and bugged, and he wound up dying from drugs in a crack house. These are the last images in his head before engaging his inner battle. Like Aeon Flux in Chronophasia, this inner battle has to be settled before he can move on. What is he settling? He didn’t do anything with his life. He didn’t contribute to the world. He thought he was special and didn’t have to follow any rules. He made up his own rules and when the rest of the world didn’t gel with his beliefs, he ended his life early.

The Inner Battle (Time is in the mind)

Keep in mind. He’s dead before we meet up with him. He’s stuck, though. (in Chronophasia the issue is exactly the same). This is the sixth time the Oracle has tried to set him right, not including the 2 times the Architect has failed with logic. Yes, the 9th time (3x3).

Unlike Chronophasia, Thomas is turned into a superhero called the One (Neo), a messianic priest that can fly around and karate chop his foes (remember, this is an adaptation from a comic book). This is an empowering thought, no? But, just as he became powerful so did his enemy, the cop. The bad guy who mistreated him, i.e. forced him to shut up and bugged him. He became a super-villain (his negative, his opposite). Smith exists in the inner battle because Thomas never settled the problem with him before he died (Karma). If there were no hackers, would you need the police to track them down? Well, how about someone who’s ascending their chakras, opening up higher ones? If you have someone who’s doing “good,” we need someone who’s doing “bad” in order for everyone to see what “good” is. As he ascends, his ultimate bad guy, the egoic mind, is playing catch up.

What’s happening? It’s a battle of consciousness vs. unconsciousness. I don’t mean in the Freud sense of unconscious, but in the Eastern (New Age… Integral) philosophical sense. He keeps fighting his super-ego (super as in larger than life, not freud’s superego) (the egoic mind) and losing. Losing. Strange concept. How do you lose to your universe? Attachment. What was he attached to?

The matrix is a computer world solely for the reason that it was Thomas’ main-living-world attachment. From macro to micro, this world was replicated in his afterlife. In other words, what other type of afterlife would a techno-geek have?

There’s the answer to why the machines look like insects. He never settled out what happened with matrix bug and later had to fight it again as a Desert of the Real bug. It’s the same bug, though.

Let’s introduce you to the different worlds of the “integral” anomaly.

From bottom to top:

Root Chakra – Color Red – The realm of physicality (survival, the right to exist)

Represented in the Matrix as:

The shirt color changes too. When it’s time to fight for their survival:

Spleen Chakra – Color Orange – Realm of sensing/sexuality

Represented in the Matrix as:

The Temple/Rave/Sex Scene.

Solar Plexus Chakra – Color Yellow – Realm of Balance and Ego (Personal Power)

Represented in the Matrix as:

The way this is expressed is to be able to see through to other chakra because higher chakras are now opened. (In the beginning for Revolutions, what you see is a chakra jump from green to yellow…in the scheme of things, yellow is below green).

Heart Chakra – Color Green – Realm of relationships, right to love

Represented in the Matrix as:

Just about everything…but the point is really made when Thomas grabs Trinity’s heart.
The matrix is also where he found love and respect:

(Motherly Love, that’s what’s in the cookies)

(Brotherly Love)

All these people loved him unconditionally.

I know what you’re saying. There’s a lot of fighting in the matrix so, how in the world could this be correct. What was his initial problem? He thought he was special. He thought he had all the answers, right? If this is true, does this type of person really need others? By the end, it was exactly the opposite. What changed? He opened this chakra where before it could only be accessed through …

The Throat Chakra – Color Blue – Realm of relationships, the right to speak

Represented by:

Zion…did they ever stop talking in Zion? Want to take a guess where that big, metal spike really hits at the other end?

Third Eye Chakra – Color Indigo – Realm of Seeing
Represented by:

The Desert of the Real: Notice that this color looks a lot like black. Against a black background with the proper settings, it would be hard to distinguish. I’m guessing this is why Zion is an electric blue and the desert is a dark blue (instead of solid indigo).

Crown Chakra – Color Purple – Realm of Knowing

There’s only one purple instance that I’ve ever been able to find. It’s the swathe of material around Neo’s eyes after he is blinded by Bane.

In the old model, it stops here.

The New Age versions depict additional chakras after the purple chakra including white chakra (it is outside of the body).

1. In the end,

Neo gets the full hit. Deus Ex activates his kundalini (those cords look like snakes for a reason) and he’s off to the source. He’s free. When will he return…when he reincarnates. Is he the black cat at the end?

2. The Oracle showed up only after he started to descend again. The orange or(an)gy…I mean, rave scene. Remember, the orange chakra is lower than where he normally is…the heart (green) or throat (blue) chakra realms.

3. Sophia Stewart’s movie was called the Third Eye. This is another name for the indigo chakra. You see. The Oracle’s smart. She can show you something for or against and still teach what’s to be learned. What difference does it make if SS made the movie or LW made that movie? As long as the point gets across. What difference does it make if the Beatles become East Indian/Anglo (Aryan) mystics or if they break-up, and John Lennon suggests it in his own little Far Eastern way? You have two different ways of selling the same message. You know the message don’t you?

4. The world’s biggest hint that will later cause people to slap themselves award goes to: Rama-Kandra for this line:

“Karma is a word, like love. A way of saying, 'what I am here to do’." Yes. Go ahead do it now.

My little opinion:

I’m of the opinion that the first movie was designed as a live-action animae. The philosophical instances are built from a stream of consciousness that flow out from all the best animae. Maybe the writers researched it to understand it better, and this must have been difficult for the times (which is probably why this it is difficult for Westerners to decipher…that and good ol’ Jebus, but I digress). The first movie seems to be edited with the Monomyth in mind. The sequel (movies two and three) seem to have more of an agenda. The Wachowskis left Campbell’s Monomyth model to follow the model that I speak of in this post. The WB turned around edited the movies to follow the Monomyth closer. The only problem was the edits left out too much, and we ended up with ETM.

All in all, I believe the writers would have liked to done it all at once, but the small budget of the first movie was a condition that could not be traversed. When they realized that they could get the money to finish what they wanted, the Brothers turned to write the sequel.

Hopefully, now, it’s obvious that the story wasn’t done until Thomas left the real world.

Now to bake a few random nodes:

It was the place Thomas appeared to save, home of rebellious “free” thoughts, which lead to his initial and subsequent deaths in the first place both in inner and outer worlds.

BUT I don't believe that WB edited the films and left out content to shape EtM. I believe it was the directors' idea and not Joel's.

And as for the Sentinels I think that they were designed by Steve Skroce. Yes, I remember him saying that the brothers told him to draw a sentinel but they didn't like what he has done, and he tried again.. and again.. and again.. and the Ws were saying to him no, that's not what we want. And suddenly Steve draw that squid little thing and the Ws approved it. So, I think that the bug = Sentinel thing might not be true.

It is something for you to figure out. If you don't put them in the oven, how will they ever bake? It's like how you have to figure out why Sati is there. Wink

I would have never thought there would have been ANY connection with the Matrix and Prince. Amazing work. I have a separate theory on why all the machine creatures resemble sea-life, but as th3 Path probably could tell you, it won't be complete for quite some time.

The subtext and text are different for Vanilla Sky. While seemingly similar in purpose, they are very different. David Aames "lost face" for different reasons.

I have yet to see Jacob's Ladder.

If you want something a little more out there with similiar themes to those you feel you see in the trilogy, a book to check out (sort of an old time-y Matrix trilogy) is the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. The first full English translation was just released a few years back Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something

Edit: I'll add to it. In Michael Porter's PEST analysis, movies would fall under the S. Only the ignorant can be controlled, but everyone gets pushed around.
