how did cypher jack in to meet agent smith in the first movie? I mean who assisted him as an operator? (remember the scene between cypher and smith while they were negotiating in a restaurant?--ignorance is bliss-- part?)

This is one of those unexplained occurences in the movies.

I would think there is no reason the entire process couldn't be automated. If he could program the system to call a phoneline and be there to receive the call he could get back out of the matrix. It is a question of whether he could reach the plug to jack himself in and out.
