You don't understand why they don't see him as NEO on their monitors?
I'd say that the reason for this is that he's not hardwired into the matrix at this point. Remember he was jacked in when not using a connection. When they insert the spike into their heads, it's not only a way for them to tap into manual control of the upload process, but alss it allows them to track their uploaded entity - direct hard-wiring = direct lock on their position. SO without the hard-wire i'm guessing the representation of NEO was greatly different from what they're used to. Hence they can see something, bu tit didn't register as Neo let alone someone jacked-in in a familiar fashion.

Everything that starts in simplicity must grow in simplicity.

Going along with that is the fact that Agent Smith wasn't reading like an agent. Neo and Smith evolve side-by-side, as they are opposite sides of the same coin. What happens to Neo happens to Smith due to their connection. But while Smith journeys outward by copying himself, Neo journeys inward. Smith's journey fosters sameness, while Neo's journey leads to true evolution.

There is a danger in thinking this way, Feral. To think that Smith's journey is incorrect in comparison to Neo's. Both are traveling the same path in opposite directions. Both are traveling it equally correctly. Neo doesn't win in the end, neather does Smith. It is a uniting of the two journeys that closes the path and turns the opposite directions into one big circle.

I'd even say their paths are inseparably entwined. They cause each other, and without Smith's path, "true evolution" would not have taken place...

That's true, Tozy.

But the details as to how that is true is where it gets tricky.
