Merovingian's "Purpose"

I'm having trouble reconciling the following two points:

1) The Merovingian and Trainman are exiles (we learn this from Enter the Matrix). I respect the authority of ETM as much as the Animatrix since both were created by the Wachowski Brothers between the first and second movies in order to fill in some gaps.

2) Through controlling Mobil Ave., the Merovingian and Trainman serve the purpose of giving programs choice just like humans (choice to not be deleted), which is one of the most important purposes a program can have under a choice-based Matrix model.

Theories, anyone? I have a theory, but I encourage everyone to think of your own theories BEFORE reading this. My theory sort of fits, but I hope there's a better answer waiting out there. Here's my theory...

The Oracle serves as a better information "trafficker" than the Merovingian since her understanding of human choice allows her to see more than just the past and present, and in fact the Oracle could even see that the Merovingian (and his helpers) would choose exile when given the choice to be deleted or not. So, the Architect decided to let the creation of Mobil Ave. serve as the means by which programs can choose against deletion, instead of whatever other solution he originally had in mind. That makes the Merovingian the first exile. The Oracle cannot "traffic" the information until the Merovingian is gone, so the Merovingian continues to fulfill his original purpose. If the Merovingian could ever be killed, the Architect could implement a more logical and desireable method of exile (since it wouldn't involve the information trafficker providing cover to exiles), and the Oracle could take over the role of Information Trafficker since the Merovingian is no longer needed for that purpose. No wonder the Merovingian hates the Oracle so much - not only did she replace him, her "eyes" give her access to more information than he has access to.

I wish the Merovingian were not an exile but that he were instead assigned to protect exiles (being the trafficker of information makes him a very reasonable candidate for this task). This would bring more meaning to the fact that the Merovingian hates the Oracle - his new purpose is that of busy work in order to acommodate a new choice-based Matrix model that his programming doesn't allow him to validate.

The Merovigian is just like the Zion-debacle: he has a purpose but it is not a purpose from rational origin.

Just like Zion, the machines don't really like the Merovigian being around, but they 'use' him cleverly to keep all the bad exiles together into one agglomerated organisation, causing much less chaos inside the Matrix.

It is not being made clear if Mobil Ave station is running on a separate machine or that it is a security program that has been clevery embedded/attached to the Matrix code itself. If so, then it is impossible for the machines to destroy this facility.

That's what I thought. I guess what's bugging me is not knowing if the Merovingian is aware that he is helping the system fulfill this purpose or if he's doing it unknowingly.

In the former scenario, he's knowingly helping to support a system based on choice - a system he neither fully understands nor respects.

In the latter scenario, well, to me it seems like he'd have to be kind of stupid not to know, which he isn't. He himself is allowed to still exist because of the choice he was given when faced with deletion. He knows the Architect is required to give programs such choices, and he knows he's providing the route by which those programs take when they choose exile. So he has to know he's fulfilling this purpose. His primary reason is probably to gain power... but doesn't it bug him that by doing so he's helping a system he doesn't buy into?

I think that Merv knows what he is doing.

In certain grail myths, the Holy Grail is not the cup of Christ. Instead, it is an emerald. And its purpose is as an alchemical tool to unite man with God/spirit.

Since the Matrix is emerald in color and is a tool to unite man with God/spirit, I take it to be the grail. In those same grail myths, the "neutral angels" (those who took neither side in the war between God and Satan) are exiled to the Grail and are given the purpose to protect it... just like Merv and the Matrix.

Assuming the Wachowski's intentionally were referencing this myth (and if you find some of my old threads on Seraph you can find more backing for this), then it follows that Merv is set up with-in the bounds of this myth. So he knows and understands his new purpose.

I think to understand Mero better you have to
understand that the machines or programs
are in a matrix of their own.

I believe that at some point Mero became
the one to their world freeing them from
the machine city. However he was
corrupted by power.

He also serves as a symbol of men who
begin a married life in love then give
up on that love to support his own agenda.

His other symbol is about Oil. He symbolises
the power of the oil companies in our world.
On a religious note he his hades.

I spend large amounts of time chatting on a forum dedicated to the Matrix trilogy. It seems pretty clear that I must be a little crazey myself, so you might have something there Red Alyce Vieomerger Wink

ps. I went to a shrink once who assured me I am not crazey. I pointed out that my former girlfriends have had a very different diagnosis, but the shrink wouldn't budge. Not crazey, whoo-hoo! Go me Smile
