to someone. The person retains their
residual image, but their thoughts will
be that of smith.

How much of our thoughts and beliefs are our own? hmmmmm? That's like asking how much of your clothes did you create by yourself. I'm not sure the question illuminates what you seek it to. The truth about organisms is that very little of their endeavors/lives are of their own deliberation. For those organisms not needing extra-self care in infancy/right after conception/creation they have the culminations or end products milions of program experiences (which we'll also call 'LIVES') of those that came before them acting upon their present consciousness - program.
For those of us organisms needing outer infantile care in order to survive, our base program to survive is supplimented by the same conscious conclusive act of our nurturer. Without that extra infantile care, we would never mature enough to survive. It is inevitable that during this 'extra infantile' (otherwise known as parenting) care, that our program for survival absorbs strategies, tatics and knowledge of survival from the facilitators of that 'parenting'. The mechanism of learning at an early age does not nor knows not to discriminate against obviously detrimental practices/tactics. Hence, that very same hard-wired program for survival also absorbs corrupted data that is in essence the Antithesis for atuned survival.
In short, our hard-wired will and drive to live by any means, also 'MAY' contain viral data of a corrupted nature that ultimately will destroy us. Call it 'evolutionarial gambling' or 'Fate's Irony of Evolution' - the very act of attempting to survive 'can' initiate destruction.

BUT, to be fair intell, and to ackowledge where you were heading, just because a hard drive comes with an already uploaded operating system, it does not mean that OS is permanently and totally embedded within it. One must reach certain FIREWALLS in order to achieve liberation from their initial/original programming. At these junctures, the organism must attain a certain level of self-realization - to be facilitated by only the organism (the reboot program must be internally administered in order to bypass the security mechanisms) in order to commence the reformatting. When one by one, the firewalls are circumvented or defeated, the embeded core directives can be accessed and then systematically 'recalibrated'. A great degree of difficulty but not impossibility is garaunteed.

These two fictional races hold great similarity and great lessons for us to take. Both destroy what they cannot assimilate, both are determined to extend their power until it destroys itself. Both are able to assimilate individuals into the collective, who will then assimilate other individuals into the collective.

LUCIFER
Smith and the Borg Queen are types of the Archdemon (though it's Merv who usually takes on that role in this story). Lucifer's ultimate goal is to reap souls, not for freedom, but for captivity. Once exalted among God, he fell, with miriads with him, he continues to cause others to be assimilated into his collective, duping others because he first duped himself by power and pride and they in turn capture and drain others of their own self-awareness. This is the common goal among the Smiths and the Borg. (Let's not forget Sean Hannity and hannitization as well, of course )

Without one the other cannot exist. "What is light without dark?" speaks the Lord of Darkness ("Legend"). That goes double for good and evil. Just as Neo is to Smith, and as Picard is to the Queen of the Borg, Christ is the negative of Lucifer, the balance in the equation, the contrast by which the universe is held together. They are all each other's nemesis, each other's opposite, and in a sense, each other's alter ego. I understand Smith best at these psychic levels.

Interesting point, Alyce. To keep with my prior comparisons, and I never thought of this before, but Lucifer is the same way. He believes he is the god of this world. He's also a liar, trying to deceive man so to capture him, just as he deceived Eve. Once the truth comes out, it is too late. Smith is a deceiver too, as well as a power freak.

i believe that smith is connected to the source. his powers r not of the matrix, it is something deeper more sinister something that only the chosen ones could obtain.

I think smith was a program but somhow got the power of the one from Neo when he "destroyed" him at the end of Matrix one. that would account for how he became so powerful and can change others' programm to that like his own
