There have been 5 other ones before Thomas Anderson. Each "One" was preceded by someone, who in the beginning, was able to teach the inhabitants of the Matrix, the truth of the Matrix.

45 minutes into THE MATRIX
Morpheus: "When the Matrix was first formed, there was a man who was born inside that had the ability to change whatever he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was he, who freed the first of us; taught us the truth. As long as the Matrix exists, the human race will never be free. After he died, the Oracle prophecized his return, and that his coming would hail the destruction of the Matrix..."

Scene from Enter the Matrix - Ghost Visits the Oracle:
Oracle: Two programs that I trusted sold my termination code to the Merovingian.
Ghost: Why did they do that?
Oracle: For love, for the life of their child.
Ghost: You knew about it and yet you let it happen.
Oracle: I had to.
Ghost: Why?
Oracle: Because the child is important. I can't tell you why, but I believe that one day the child will change our world and your world forever.

End of Revolutions:
Sati: Look! Look! (meaning the sunset sky)
Oracle: Just look at that. Beautiful. Did you do that?
Sati: For Neo.

Sati looks human. The Oracle and Sati can tell others she was born in the Matrix, or tell others she is a machine who can program.

===================
The obstacle to the truth is humans are more comfortable living in the virtual world, even if it is not real (Program - Animatrix). We also see this in Cypher. If it were possible to come and go from the Matrix, then those who were freed from its bondages would soon return to it because of the level of comfort and safety.

This is why the Architect does not object to the end of the War. As humans are connected to the Matrix, it becomes possible for the Sentinels to retrieve them and return them to their power stations. Living in a dream machine, these inhabitants no longer realize they are living a fantasy.

===============
The Oracle, like the Architect, shapes the course of the Matrix. She can see into the future because she causes these events to happen, such as Neo breaking the vase. The Architect, on the other hand, shapes events both inside and outside the Matrix, as represented by Reloaded.

In Reloaded, Trinity is predestined to die at the start of the movie. We see that her death is caused by a series of events. Neo has these premonitions and asks her to stay out of the Matrix. This was by design. By keeping Trinity out of the Matrix, she witnesses the death of Captain Sorenson and the crew of the Vigilant. This forces her to reenter the Matrix, and to her death.

The implication here is, the Real World is also an illusion. This is what Spoon Boy was eluding to when Bane presented Neo with the spoon. This is why Neo's powers extend to the Source.

===============
Whether Sati continues the path for the Seventh One or she herself liberates the inhabitants of the Matrix is up for the Wachowski brothers to decide in the follow up to this trilogy.

Every human in the Matrx is either a machine or software. There are no more humans in the virtual world. Neo is a program; Morpheus is a program; Smith is a program; the Oracle is a program.

This is the reason for the animated story, Matriculated.

Animatrix - The Second Rennaisance Part 2 explains how the destruction of the sky came about. Operation Dark Storm was a meant to stop the machines because machines were dependent on solar power, an explanation we also find in The Matrix through Morpheus.

In Matriculated, the humans who survived Operation Dark Storm, attempted to trick the remaining machines into thinking they are human.

The humans set up a watch post, and when runners, sentinels, or other machines came across their way, they would lure them to a camp, where the machines would be ambushed. After the ambush, they would ressurrect the machines in a virtual simulation of the real world.

The humans felt it was better to trick the machines in a sumulation, and make the machines believe they were human, rather than reprogramming them. We also discover that there are different levels of intelligence among the same models.

As the story Matriculated nears the end, the humans were eventually wiped out, not because of a lack of sustinence from Operation Dark Storm as we might suspect, but from the war with the machines of Zero One.

Matriculated ends with a machine, believing it was a human, standing its post, waiting to lure other machines to the camp, just as humans did in the beginning of the story.

Therefore, humanity is dead either because of Dark Storm or the war with the machines, and the machines are fighting other machines who think they are human.

The problem for The Matrix is the machines are realizing there is something wrong with the simulated world because there are different levels of intelligence. The Architect and Oracle are software created to moderate the virtual world, and Sati is the latest addition to the system of control.

The question is, whether Sati is going to lead a rebellion against the Real World in the Matrix, as the Oracle suspects, or if Sati will continue the path of the One and remain an element of control within the Matrix.

If Sati does lead the machines to discover their lives were manufactured through the virtual world, how will their human consciousness handle the reality they are machines, guilt of killing their masters, and the concept of God and salvation, when they were made by man?

These are questions I hope to see addressed in the sequel to the Matrix Trilogy.

=============
We may find that humans did not perish, and are actually monitoring the virtual world and inserting software to keep the machines trapped in the virtual world.

If so, the question becomes, WHY? Why not just shut them down permanently and end the war for good? This is where I have trouble with humans war with Zero One exists.

Kewl post, Unmatriculated Smile The first counter argument I could see is: why does the Architect tell Neo that Neo is "irrevocably human" if Neo is also a program/machine?
