»Why "Neo"?«

It's not his real name, it's thomas if im not mistaken. It's just like i'll be called imposter.
Why does everyone call him that?

It's a bit like the Nation of Islam. Thomas Anderson is Neo's slave name. It was the name he was given inside of (and indirectly by) his oppressors.

Neo is his chosen name (like El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and Malcom X were Malcolm Little's chosen names). It was the name he earned and the name that those who assisted in his liberation identified him by. Only his oppressors continued to use the name Thomas Anderson.

True, he could have continued to use his old name, the name itself is not important. It is the connection the name implies that is important. Neo is the name of a liberated messiah. Thomas Anderson is the name of bored dissaffected computer programmer.

Well there is a simple answer to this, if you take the "O" form Neo and move it to the front it spells One. Also the word "Neo" is derrived from the Greek word "Neos" which means New. It is possible that Neo - One was a Coincidence, but i believe it originally meant New, as in a "New Begining" or "New World", he is there to right the wrongs and beat the system. The mission of the One is to start a new begining heading back to the source (Matrix Reloaded). Another reason for him being Neo opposed to Eno or something like that, is because his mission is to make peace with the machines, which is also new to the Matrix world. Neo is doing something that has never been done before in the history of The Matrix therefore it is new

Precisely...beyond what Morpheus knew, or thought he knew, about the prophecy, Neo was here to do something unprecidented.

He sought Peace.

It wasn't about defeating the Machines, but simply finding a way to end the war. What "The Second Renaissance" from Animatrix taught us was that the Machines were not implicitly hostile from the get go. It was HUMANKIND that created the unnecessary aggression, as we have done throughout our entire history.

No one is excited, unless we are divided.
