I actually agree with almost all of your assessments of the movie, as far as filmmaking goes. I agree that it could have been done so much better. But as far as the philosophy in the movies goes there is something else. If you look at it from your point of view then it is absolutely unfulfilling, as you point out well. But if you look at it from an esoteric angle then it makes sense. I don't know if you are familiar with any esoteric studies. There is too much subject matter to go into here. Two examples of esoteric studies are Theosophy and Rosicrucian. There are many others but if you care to you can start by researching those to get the idea if you are not already familiar with that. Yes it is about spirituality but scientifically explained. Additionally, I have good info that the brothers got their idea for the matrix from some esoteric forums they participated in and it shows in the movie. Since I am thouroughly familiar with esotericism I can see it in the movies. BTW esotericism encompasses the base philosophy of Hinduism which is why you see alot of that, as well as the concepts of all the avatars from Buddha to Christ.

First of all, who are you talking to? Smile

Second, good points. But I would hesitate to place too much emphasis on esoteric groups, and instead primarily apply the so-called 'esoteric' principles, or 'Mysteries'.... the Gnostics, the Mystery schools, all the various secret groups from antiquity all the way to the present day, all held views and beliefs that we might call 'esoteric.' But all 'esoteric' really means is, 'Intended for or understood by only a particular group.' I believe that the Matrix movies' intention is to break through all that, and bring those Mysteries into everyone's mind. Whether we actually choose to confront those Mysteries or not is up to each of us.

The meaning of 'esoteric' that I think you are applying is the sort of connotation of the inner, perennial philosophy found in so many cultures, religions, and c., such as Hinduism, Christianity, Platonism, Buddhism, &c. I absolutely agree that this is definitely present in The Matrix Trilogy.

Third, what is this 'good info' you have about the W.bros 'participating in esoteric forums?' I'm merely curious.

And finally, how can you be 'thoroughly familiar with esotericism?' Are you affiliated with any of the current groups of Western esotericism? or have you just studied them a lot? I have been making my way steadily through lots of different philosophies, including esoteric ones, and I have a hard time seeing how anyone could ever be 'thoroughly familiar' with even one of them! There is so much yet to know....

shadowprint, if you would like to talk more with me about this, by all means pm me, or email me (see list at left). ...and, oh yeah... Welcome to forums! Smile

I hate this thread. I keep reading it as "Eroticism in the Matrix." It gets my hopes up.

Imagine a cool picture right nere. Then click on that picture and go to my site.
