We know that AI programs grow/change by having experiences with humans.

Agents do hardly interact with humans. When they do come into contact with humans it's only in order to kill them or interrogate them.

So things like learning love and compassion are hardly an issue for them.

So the rules for the agents are simple. Humans that don't want to accept the program are seen as enemies/exiles/criminals. It's their job to eliminate them from the system.

I think agent Smith was programmed (by the Architect) to be more intelligent. It is very clear that Smith is the leader of the threesome in M1. Also during chases (Trinity and Neo in M1), Smith seems to be the only one who outsmarts the rebels by being at the exiting point before them.

His intelligence is what makes him more devoted. And his devotion is what makes him frustrated. He feels he stands above all, even above his partners. His intelligence drives him to believe that humans are weak and rather a nuisance than a solution for the machines.

Killing Neo is a satisfaction for him. His devotion finally payed off: he killed a rebel that was ambigious and hard to kill.

But then, Neo rises and Smith's frustration is complete. He is the only agent that runs at Neo in pure anger.

It was inevitable for Neo to jump into him. What would you do if you discovered that you were the One? You see an agressive agent that keeps coming at you, keeps coming out your fellow rebels. Killing him won't help, he will just abuse another innocent mind as an host. So you too would try to hack the agent, in order to see if this would shut him up forever.

So there you have it. The Architect progammed him to have smarter qualities than the other agents. The system does the rest and makes him the opposite to the One.

I believe that Smith got the power to infect other programs and multiply himself, threatening to take over the System, because that was the plan of the Oracle. Not the Architect's.

Why?

The Oracle was interested in one thing: The future. Peace between man and machines. So she devised a very risky plan, "a very dangerous game" (Architect). That plan is the script of the three movies. The trilogy. The Trinity?

Oracle places code in Neo to be the One. I believe she also placed code in Neo that will turn Smith into a virus. That code is copied to Smith when Neo jumps inside of him. I also believe that the Oracle placed code in Neo and in Trinity so they would fall in love. That made Neo choose the door on the left, to prevent a reload, and fulfull her plan. And it worked.

If this is right, then, Architect! That plan not bad for a lesser mind, uh?

In fact (I know this will seem awkward to most of you) I have gathered a lot of of hints showing that in fact, those agents were not real Agents but Smith. The presence of Smith just before and after the fight is not a coincidence. According to me, Smith can change his shape into the people he infected.

I'll make a post about it with all the details, but it would explain the "upgrade" thing while we see the same "upgraded agent" having hard time figthing Morpheus... but yet Morpheus get beaten by Smith in no time !
