[cough, cough]
Thanks for asking, One-Der Man; I'm sorry I didn't post anything more interesting, but I thought you all were doing just fine, and I was enjoying where it was going. But, since you asked....
According to Joseph Campbell's matrix-explained.com..., (anything to plug this topic I started; I really want some others' opinions on it!) many myths, and often, use outside influences to get the job done, so to speak. He calls this (variously, depending on the situation and position in the myth) Supernatural Aid, or Rescue from Without. Arguably, other steps in the Journey could also be used in this way.
As for me, I think that outside influences are essential. It does not matter what you call it, or where it comes from; we have all seen it, at one time or another, in some form or another.
an anecdote: When I was a kid, there was one time I was riding my bicycle very fast down a not-very-busy road. I wasn't expecting any cars to be coming, because they usually didn't on this road, and I was about to run a stop sign. Suddenly, I heard some guy yell out, "Look out, there's a car!" I slammed on the brakes, and sure enough, some jerkoff was barreling down this residential side street; there was no way he would have stopped if I hadn't; I would have been a grease spot. I breathed, thanked the guy and started to ride away. I looked around only a few seconds later, to see where the guy had come from, or where he was going. I saw no one.
Naturally, that's something you never forget. Outside influence. God, perhaps, or, as I thought at the time, an angel. Or maybe fate? Destiny stepping in to nudge you back on course. Whatever it is, I am grateful for the chance it gave me to continue on my own Journey.
That's what I think.
