Smith took over all of the humans (well, we dont know if he took over ALL of them, but most of them). Once a Smith dies, the person he took over dies too. (It happened with the agents in the 1st film). So if all the agents died, shouldnt all the humans be dead?

For programs however, they are rebooted with the matrix and put into use again. Like the Oracle, Seraph, and even Sati who was an exile.

we didnt see any humans at the end of Revolutions after the matrix was reloaded.

Smith was no longer an agent, he is unplugged a new man so to speak.

Smith didn't die, he was purged from the system.

In the first film, the host body if you like was killed and so the agent scarpered.

At the end of revolutions, the hosts were't touched, smith was kinda sucked out of them.

Well there kinda has to be humans alive cos Oracle asks the Arc what about the Ones that want out? Arc’s reply: ‘obviously they’ll be freed’. So Smith couldn’t have functioned like an agent.

Here’s a thought... Smith was a virus and Neo was the cure Democratically prosecuted and legally crucified

Also I was wondering...

do we know for sure that people die when Agents leave their software?

They can move in and out of any software still hard wired to their system. –Morpheus M1

The ones we see are killed in fights etc, but the others….?

Makes me think?.. we are not told specifically that they die but that they move in and out

Any thoughts?

yah i think that if they leave anyone that the person becomes confused maybe passes out....thinks it was a dream maybe...maybe the system picks up after the agents. picks the people up and takes them to there home and stuff.

Check out the comics on the official site, they suggest otherwise.

Where are the comics that are mentioned? I'm not sure, sorry.

I can think of one instance where we see a person returned after the Agent leaves… the helicopter pilot in M1. Although he is dead, but then why would he come back if he’s been deleted or overwritten etc?

It makes no sense for humans to be wasted every time an Agent moves into them.

I am beginning to think that that they 'move in and out' of software not delete/kill it.

That’s what it says. in & out not in & delete. Although the effect might possibly kill the human in the pod?

Be a waste of a battery, surely the machines are able to be more efficient than that.

Any one else think of an instance where we see a person taken over return?

If a rebel shoots the agent and `kills' him then the host's body dies.

If the agent chooses to leave the host then the host does not recall anything.

That seems to be the way it works,

However, there's a curious part to this (I'll try to avoid "plot hole" for fear of being proved wrong)

The comic "Prodigal Son" is about a guy who blacks out, and when he comes to he's surrounded by bodies. He has no recollection of the events.

According to Morpheus, the reason you get hurt or die for real when it happens in the matrix is because "Your mind makes it real". You think you're hurt so you are hurt.

But if you black out when you're taken over.
Then the agent gets shot (you're still blacked out)
You wouldn't know you'd been shot.

Looks like morpheus' reliability takes another hit. Very Happy

I suppose the answer to this could be that the agent leaves just before the bullet impacts - but I'm not convinced. Cool

When an agent leaves an individual there is no reason that individual should die.

How do agents get inside them in the first place?

They hijack that individual's connection to the matrix...and use it for a while...whenever they want they can just let that individual continue....

What happens to that individual meanwhile...I don't know...Maybe he again gets "please hold, your call is important to us" message ;/

What would happen if Agent Smith tried to copy himself by overwriting one of the other Agent Smiths?

It happened in fact:)

I think it's simple...just as if he overwrote human....

But term overwriting isnt completely applicable in this situation since Agent Smith possesses some of the memories of the individual he infected...and maybe abilities....so that person isn't completely gone....Also when Smith dies in the end we see Oracle lying there....
