This was suggested as a possible poll and I think knnknn would find it made a good addition to the Polls section. In the meantime I think we can just talk about it here. Anyone want to make any additions? I've thought of a few myself already....

Title: What is the best speech from the whole trilogy.

1. "Why, Why, Why?" Agent Smith
(In the hole -M3)

2. "Purpose" Agent Smith
(Before the Burly Brawl -M2)

3. "We are the cure" Agent Smith
(Torturing Morpheus -M1)

4. "We are still here!" Morpheus
(At the temple in Zion -M2)

5. "This is a war and we are soldiers" Morpheus
(The Plan -M2)

6. "Say what I wanted to say" Trinity
(Dieing -M3)

7. "Choice is an illusion" Merovingian
(Le Vrai Restaurant -M2)

8. "Zion is about to be destroyed" The Architect
(Through the "door made of light" -M2)

Personally I'm unsure about the "we are still here" speech. I wasn't that impressed. I reckon the best speech must be the "this a war" speech because it is one of coolest catchiest parts of the trilogy that doesn't involve fighting.

My all-time fave is the one in construct (M1) where Morpheus is explaining what agents are to Neo and ends w/one of my favorite lines:

Quote:

Neo: What are trying to tell me...that I can dodge bullets?
Morpheus: No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.

How would YOU be able to tell the difference between the dream world...and the real world?

My favourite used to be the Burly Brawl 'purpose' speech...until Revolutions then The Smith 'crater' speech topped that. I found it so full of meaning and very 'emotional'... Cool

I should probably have described it as the "I hate this place" speech

my seroius one would have to be either the smith human viruses speech from m1

or

the "have you ever had a dream neo?" speech

as for funny ones

sparks in enter the matrix has the best ones

"seeing as you obviously have no regard for your own lives...i beg of you...think about something that does have meaning...namely my life"

"shut up sparks!"

"yeah sure..why not"

A MAJOR,FULL ON BRONSON

Yeah Pawnatron. I have to admit that I had kinda underrated the Virus speech (it keeps changing names each time it's referred to doesn't it?). The thing is that I don't think it is as well written as the "This is a war" speech, but it is undoubtedly better performed.

I'm not sure that Sparks ever talks long enough for it to be counted as a speech. The Morpheus quote before Neo "wakes up" isn't really a speech either. However, I must say that the whole construct training program bit where Morpheus explains what the matrix is does basically count as one big speech. Neo replies every now and then, but not enough to break the basic flow of it.

'Why Mr. Anderson' is my favourite speech in all the saga. Just really hit me as fantastic, I can't get it out of my head.... ever. The virus speach and the unplugged speach were both good but 'Why Mr. Anderson' will always be my favourite, so questioning and Smith is so infuriated with a mix of frustration and questioning. Hugo Weaving will always remain the greatest actor ever.

Well..... here I am.

no he doesn't

(btw is this the five minute argument or the ten minute argument? Wink)

Hmmm I suppose we could add to the list the

"everything that has a beginning has an end" speech

The bits in the park (in M2) and in the kitchen (in M1) aren't really long enough to be called speeches. They rely too much on Neo's reactions. (I let the architect off because he says sooo much and most of it doesn't rely on Neo saying anything at all).

it is my fav...most inspirational to me...

Quote:

Morpheus: All of our lives we have fought this war. Tonight I believe we can end it. Tonight is not an accident. There are no accidents. We have not come here by chance. I do not believe in chance when I see 3 objectives, 3 captains, 3 ships. I do not see coincidence, I see providence, I see purpose. I believe it is our fate to be here. It is our destiny. I believe this night holds for each and every one of us the very meaning of our lives.

Morpheus: Then tomorrow we may all be dead, but how would that be different from any other day? This is a war, and we are soldiers. Death can come for us at any time, in any place.

Morpheus: Now consider the alternative. What if I am right? What if the prophecy is true? What if tomorrow the war could be over. Isn't that worth fighting for? Isn't that worth dying for?

Quote:

Smith: Mister Anderson! Did you get my package?
Neo: Yeah.
Smith: Well, good.
Smith: Surprised to see me?
Neo: No.
Smith: Then you're aware of it.
Neo: Of what?
Smith: Our connection. I don't fully understand how it happened. Perhaps some part of you imprinted onto me, something overwritten or copied. That is at this point irrelevant, what matters is that whatever happened, happened for a reason.
Neo: And what reason is that?
Smith: I killed you, Mister Anderson, I watched you die... With a certain satisfaction, I might add, and then something happened. Something that I knew was impossible, but it happened anyway. You destroyed me, Mister Anderson. Afterward, I knew the rules, I understood what I was supposed to do but I didn't. I couldn't. I was compelled to stay, compelled to disobey. And now here I stand because of you, Mister Anderson, because of you I'm no longer an agent of the system, because of you I've changed - I'm unplugged - a new man, so to speak, like you, apparently free.
Neo: Congratulations.
Smith: Thank you. But as you well know, appearances can be deceiving, which brings me back to the reason why we're here. We're not here because we're free, we're here because we're not free. There's no escaping reason, no denying purpose - because as we both know, without purpose, we would not exist.
Smith 2: It is purpose that created us,
Smith 3: Purpose that connects us,
Smith 4: Purpose that pulls us,
Smith 5: That guides us,
Smith 6: That drives us,
Smith 7: It is purpose that defines,
Smith 8: Purpose that binds us.
Smith: We're here because of you, Mister Anderson, we're here to take from you what you tried to take from us. Purpose.

One-der-man, I counted that as part of the speech where he says:

"This is a war and we are soldiers. Death can come for us at any time and in any place."
