As for my avatar...if you're not in the States you probably wouldn't know who it is. It's comedian Dave Chappelle from his hilarious show on Comedy Central, "Chappelle's Show." Chappelle is spoofing a Samuel Adams beer commercial as Samuel L. Jackson. You may know Chappelle from the movie "Half Baked." Another hilarious movie.

Chappelle also does a comedy skit on Dr. Katz.

Here in Australia we do get Chappelle's Show, fairly good. But have you seen our show Pizza? Kick's the crap out of it (probably wouldn't be as funny to people in the U.S.) Also, Graham Linehan's 'Big Train' is one of the best sketch shows out there, very worth seeing it.

Fist of the North Star is the worst anime I've ever seen.
Akira is one of the best, seen more times then I can remember. Spirited Away rulz, Ghost in the Shell rulz. Infact I could come up with a huge list of great Animes but I won't.

The thing about Disney is that they're stealing scumbags and have no respect for Anime or any Asian/eastern movie companies. The movie 'The Lion King' was originally going to be a tribute to the old 1960 anime "Kimba the White Lion." Rather then releasing it as a tribute, they decided to release 'The Lion King' as an 'Original' and when asked declined they had any knowledge of Kimba the White Lion.
Here's a sight arguing the similarities and legal issues of the two cartoons -

Fist of the Northstar is NOT bad but it is far from one of the best, it's over the top and violent, thats it's point. If you want examples of truely bad anime then look no further than Pokemon....utter sh!te!

It would seem that even over ten years Akira is still a landmark, either that or it's just the one everyone quotes when they know feck all about anime. There are countless anime out there that go unnoticed which have better stories but no so much attention lavished on the animation.

Personal faves are 'Project A-ko' 'Tank Police' and what i consider a masterpiece 'Doomed Megalopolis'

HA, true.
Akira is a great anime, but definately not the best. My favourite is Neon Genesis Evangelion. Fantastic stuff. Ofcourse most people do say Akira is their favourite anime and just leave it at that. Me, I keep trying to get my hands on as many animes as possible. Bezerker looks pretty good, any one seen it? Cowboy Bepop, now that's bloody good. Orphan is alright. Ryuonin Kenshin rulz. Oh god I'm making the list....

It's really good. But, I'm not the foremost expert on anime so my opinion can be taken for whatever you feel it's worth. I've seen most of the anime talked about in this thread w/ my favorites being: Ninja Scroll, Princess Mononoke, & Ghost in the Shell. Trigun, however, surpasses all of those.

As for the boxset, I've considered buying it also but one of the guys I used to work with (huge anime freak) said the quality of the DVD's isn't very good. He actually said the VHS box set has better quality. Needless to say, I'm pretty confused as to why the DVD quality would be worse than the VHS. Whatnow

Oh well, the episodes I've Tivo'd will have to do for now. Cool

Meh, I think I'll still buy it. The Dvd ofcourse, VHS is shoddy on so many levels. One, you have to rewind and fast forward instead of just skipping so easily and conveniently with the dvds. Two, VHS's quality detoriates with use and time. Three, just the overall inconvenience.

No, but I'm seeing it this weekend. Has the famous rain fight that inspired the Revolutions Super Brawl in the rain.

i've heard that being mentioned before... there are also some similarities if you watch the short fight scene at Po Chi Lam between Wong Fei Hung & Iron Robe Yim, in the first Once Upon A Time In China movie.

It's got the girl who plays Gogo in Kill Bill in it! (Gogo was Oren Ishii's schoolgirl bodyguard) She is so cool in both movies! Razz *drools*

i FINALLY got around to seeing Kill Bill Vol. 2 today! it was good, although i thought it was a bit overly self-indulgent in places..

and just to be picky, i thought the chapter where we see Beatrix training with Pai Mei REALLY showed up the weaker side of Uma Thurman's martial arts... don't get me wrong, she did a good job for the movies.. and she looks cool swinging that sword, but her fist forms were rather weak, especially her tiger crane and snake styles.

oh and the subtitles for Pai Mei were way off at times...

.. but other than that it was good!

i think Vol. 1 shades it though.

it's hard to remember since i only saw it once... and i couldn't find a transcript online...

but for example... i seem to remember Gordon Liu is saying something like how she's all out of breath from climbing up all those steps... but in the subtitles he asks why she looks so pathetic or something....

don't quote me on that.. i'd have to have the DVD to be able to say exactly.. but i mean.. they never hindered the understanding of what was going on.. they were just frequently inaccurate..

well yes and no.. its true that i've never seen subtitles that i felt were 100% but i would say subtitle inaccuracies normally fall into 3 categories..

1) inaccurate to the extent that it makes it difficult to understand what's being said or becomes unintentionally funny possibly because of grammer/spelling errors.

2) inaccurate in that the words don't translate very well from their original language into english, so they have to find an equivalent, possibly altering the meaning slightly in the process.

3) inaccurate in that they've inexplicably changed the meaning from something that was easily translatable into something else, but it doesn't affect the understanding of the dialogue/scene.

In Kill Bill Vol.2 there was still a lot of accurate translations but there were also a lot of category 3 inaccuracies, particularly in the beginning when Uma 1st climbs the steps to meet Pai Mei

Do you guys think it's possible that the mistakes in translation were intentional on the part of QT. I mean, he's quoted as saying this is his homage to those 60's-70's Kung-Fu movies. If you've seen one, you can attest to the fact that many of them are poorly (that's being nice) dubbed. QT could be having a little fun by fooling w/the translation.
