Based on their civilisation i reckon they worked out how long it would take to have an ecological disaster. Thanks to our 'poisoning' of the earth we are proving them right.

The Mayans were a remarkable civilization when you consider the time of their existence, how much they knew in terms of technology and their surroundings (space, ect). Their calender could very well be right, we certainly have helped it by polluting basically everything we touch.
