Why not doves? Maybe because she lives in the Matrix, not happy unicorn prancing pony tittyfuck fairy land.

I think you meant pigeons.

The answer is: Because crows are cooler, especially when Smith was walking towards Neo in slow motion (like in "Baywatch"), and they were all flying away from him. Very cool shot.

What the fuck, over.

According to the Navajo peoples mythology, The Crow is representative of the Black God - he uses the Crow as a disguise. They also believe that Crows see what is aproaching before it appears.
The Australian Aboriginis regard the Crow as a great trickster or deciever. Cool Another thing about crows is the Celts associated them with death because of the way they fed on the dead bodies of warriors after a battle...

The Oracle was feeding the crows the same stuff she gave to Neo. We have all seen how agressive Neo can get from time to time, and it makes perfect sense that the crows you encountered have been influenced by the same substance.

The Crows may have attacked you because you were encroaching on their territory and they may have had a nest with young, which they will defend ~
Crows do get a bad press but they are extremely intelligent birds all the same... Smile

Yeah, i figured. Also, agressive crows, agressive neo. makes sence. But i must add now, that crows would do a lot better in the scene. I mean, smith walking slow motion through crows as they fly towards the camera. isn't that more sinister? doves might only be used in joyous scenes. like...a wedding.

Crows are black, and the Matrix crew of heroes always wear black. The reversal is deliberate: "bad guy" Architect wears white, and wasn't the Merovingian also dressed in very light colors?

There was a Chuck Norris karate "epic" in the 70's called Good Guys Wear Black, in which Norris obviously wore black clothes all the time, along with sunglasses.

Is it possible the outfits are an "homage" to this movie?

You have got the point. Do you think it is coincidience that Neo is suddenly "Missiing In Action"?

Well, Morpheus says he does not believe in coincidences!

On the other hand, I would really hate to think that old Chuck Norris movies are the ultimate key to The Matrix Trilogy ! Laughing

The Matrix is built to represent any major U.S. city in the late 20th century. You're more apt to see crows than doves.

Crows were used because the Wachowskis like black people better than white people....

hahahahahaha, or is it, lol?

In Greek myth Crows were sacred to both Apollo and Athena, but even Athena would not let them perch on the roof as it was a symbol of death. However, it is said that Crows were originally white, but due to deception by another person or a god believing the Crow was lying they were transformed into black to show that they were malicious. It seems myths contradict each other often when it comes to the Crow. In Celtic mythology, white Crows appear in myths as good people. The side the Crow appears on or what the Crow does can change whether the appearance of the Crow is a good or evil symbol.

Crows are believed to judge and murder other crows in their territory, and it is for this myth that a flock of Crows is called a murder. The basis is that Crows will kill a dying Crow that doesn't belong in their territory or much more commonly feed on carcasses of dead Crows. Also, both Crows and Ravens are associated with battlefields, medieval hospitals, execution sites and cemeteries (because they scavenge on human remains). In England, a tombstone is sometimes called a raven stone.

There's a post i read somewhere (can't remember where) that mentions a spanish saying that goes along the lines of "raise crows and they will peck your eyes out"..

If you think about it.. this is the scene where the Oracle tells Neo that he must get the Keymaker from the Merovingian.. and what is it that Merv wants so badly in Revolutions?

Crows have everything to do with the Or

Crows are the most accurate "simbol" to the Or...

The Crows are linked to the god Apollo...

The Oracle is, obviously, the representation of the Oracle of Delfos - in ancient greece - which was dedicated to the god Apollo...

The Oracle is linked to this particular oracle also because of the sentence "Temet Nosce" - Know thyself...

The sentence was carved above the entrance of the Oracle of Delfos - and the sentence also sayd:

Know thyself - you'll know the world and the gods - adapted

It's really significant.

Then, in the other hand - if you look at it - if the Oracle is linked to to the crows - then the Kid is linked to the Oracle as well (remember how does begin "Kid's Story" from the Animatrix?

The crow is also present in the story of the "Haunted Mansion" in the Animatrix...

Clues, clues.... maybe?

Inevitability

Clues? I think so.

The anomaly is systemic right? The haunted house is referred to as a ‘rendering anomaly’ & we see the crows. I believe the crows reveal the darker side of the anomaly; they seem fly with (or alongside) Smith in M2.

The Matrix has an anomaly within it, Neo & Smith represent it’s meaning. Interesting too that the Oracle is found feeding them, maybe because they need love too, like everything does.

Link - Smith vs Crows

Inev:

I disagree about Smith being connected to the crows.

Many Matrix refferences are done under the "dark side" scope - we see terrorists as the liberators vs the agents of the sistem (including cops) as those who intent to keep the "status quo";

The Matrix uses an old simbol (as the crows) in it's neutral meaning.

The fact that the Or is feeding them is significant - they're connected to her somehow.

When Smith appears, the crows are scared by him - it seems that Smith has some "counter" effect on them.

And the Oracle "flew" as well when Smith was about to arrive...

Inevitability

I was interested to find out a bit more about crows, so I did little investigating, in context of their meaning within the story.

Crows are predators and scavengers and will eat anything they can subdue

Crows will eat eggs and nestlings of songbirds, and in some areas might have a significant impact of a local population of birds

They take over.

Sound familiar?

Yeap - that's the most common thought about crwos and I may guess you're linking it to Smith...

But, I think the meaning of the link towards Apollo, the fact that the Oracle is indeed "quoted" to be a refference to the oracle of Delfos and the oracle of Delfos in honour to the God Apollo makes a bit more sense to me...

Although I can't deny that the Oracle feeding the Crows could be interpreted as a mother tryin to feed her "naughty" boy (as she tries when Smith visits her and smashes the cookies aginst the wall);

Well, this is the bad thing (and the best thing about simbols) - they have many paths to be chosen in order to achieve some kind of interpretation Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something
